Marchionne wants Fiat/Chrysler and GM to merge?

Two cars companies whose products I generally avoid like the plague (aside from Jeep). Might be a match made in heaven.

I sent that article to my father-in-lawn (who spends the majority of his time turning Chrysler, GM and Ford products into police vehicles) and this was his response:

I would be surprised, knowing the history of GM if they would even consider any type of
partnership or merger with Chrysler. Walter P. Chrysler the founder of Chrysler Corp.
was at one time the President of GM and when he left he bought a little know auto mfg.
and renamed it Chrysler. I can't think of any time GM & Chrysler collaborated on any
thing in the past (like the GM-Ford Transmission venture). GM has never thought
much of Chrysler - so this guy is beating his head against a brick wall if he thinks
GM would even entertain his proposal. And since most of Ford stock is owned by the
Ford family, I doubt they'd be too interested either. I wouldn't be too upset if Chyser
went the way of Yugo - they have nearly the same build quality!

Jeep, actual jeeps, are fascinating. Apalling build quality that's totally acceptable in the marketplace because it's not bought as a vehicle but more a lifestyle accessory.

I’ve rented some GMs that I liked, but I wouldn’t buy one. Definitely more fun to drive than any Ford I’ve ever touched.

So, he wants to finally save GM from themselves?

Say what you will about the FIAT takeover, but keep in mind that the giant recall/buyback is for vehicles that were designed and built BEFORE their involvement, yet they are stuck with the tab.

Also, the Chrysler group as a whole has stepped up their game tremendously under FIAT control. Unlike the Daimler/Chrysler debacle that nearly killed BOTH companies and saw Mercedes reliability rating take a massive dump, FIAT has elevated the overall quality and desirability of the brand.

GM is a festering anal wart that should have died years ago. The ONLY reason I am glad they didn't, is because of the job losses that would have happened as a result.

They are pure garbage, from design to execution, and the criminal cover up that they perpetuated for over a decade while people were dying because of it should have resulted in people going to prison and the company stripped of their assets.

To me GM died when they canceled the F-body project and replaced it with Pontiac Aztek production because "that [was] the future".

I'm a Ford guy through and through. That said, if I were looking for a pickup truck, I'd actually buy a RAM 1500 with a Hemi. Those things are beautiful and beastly.

I understand where you're coming from here but they are insanely common where I live. Almost every one of them is driven by a suburban dad with fantasies of doing some contracting and handyman work on the weekends.

And every time another pickup owner tries to compare fuel economy with me, they shut up quick.

I don't even start it. They brag. I tell them what I'm averaging (under 12L/100km) and they say, "Oh."

I really didn't want the HEMI Ram, but it's what I could afford and the diesels on the lots all have tooled leather interiors with a cowboy theme. I'm glad I got it because I've heard of the diesels getting the same or worse fuel economy and diesel is more expensive here.

I'd just haul shit with it.

The severity of the penalty is due not to design mistakes made in the past but the continued failure to properly adress those mistakes. And on that count the current leadership is quite culpable.

Anyhow, I don't mean to come across as bashing Fiat. As the owner of a 500C, I'm obviously a fan of their vehicles, but I also have a vested interest in making sure they properly address these kind of issues.

Two words that would tip anyone off of the huge potential for failure:

FIAT

Chrysler

OGG: I know you like both but each company's long history of turning out steaming piles of crap has made me biased to those two names.

Misinformation is a bitch.

Yes, Chrysler has been turning out consistent turds for several straight decades. Their overall improvement since the FIAT involvement has been nothing short of amazing. Are there still problems to sort out? Absolutely.

FIAT took a bad hit to their reputation in the 70s and 80s for a variety of reasons. Some of which were legit, most of which were beyond their control due to the then socialist government interference.

The cars that made it to the US in those years suffered badly from rust issues caused by cheap and improperly treated steel. There were also some electrical gremlins that in all honesty, while real, were nothing like the electrical gremlins that affected virtually all European cars of the era. Chief among the list of top offenders was the British Leyland group that oversaw Triumph, MG and Jaguar... all of which had nightmarish reliability issues and two of those brands not only pulled out of the US, but went away completely from the world market. The MG name once again adorns new automobiles, and the Triumph name once again adorns new motorcycles, but they are just names and share no lineage with their namesakes.

If you're old enough, you would remember a time when American roads were packed with FIATs, Alfa Romeos, Lancias, Renaults, Peugots, MGs, Triumphs, Jensen/Austin Healys, etc.

They all suffered the same woes and the same fate.

FIAT is the worlds largest car maker. Not GM, not Toyota. ..

They not only survived that abysmal period many decades ago, but turned their fortunes around in a staggering success story.

Don't forget, Ferrari would have been gone decades ago if not for FIAT. Arguably, the best cars to emerge from Maranello, did so under the control and leadership of FIAT. Even though they are in the process of taking Ferrari public, they will still be the main driving force behind the Prancing Horse, and the F1 cars will still proudly display the FIAT logo.

In Europe and abroad, FIAT does not have the negative connotations associated with it that it does here. Nick Mason recently called the FIAT 500 the greatest car in history. .. let that sink in a little.

Also remember that at the time 'Fix It Again Tony" was a popular phrase, Americans as a whole considered ANY foreign car to be unworthy. I remember those days well, when Billy Joe Jim Bob and his beer guzzling buddies would talk endless shit about a Honda or Toyota while proudly standing by there atrocious abominations like a late 80s Corvette that barely produced 150 BHP to the crank, and got 8 miles to a gallon of gas.

Meanwhile, Datsun would sell you a 280Z that put 168 ponies to the rear wheels, get 30 MPG, and still be driveable after 5 years for several thousand dollars less.

Fact is, during the 70s and 80s, the only cars that weren't raging pieces of shit, were Japanese.

Long post was long but informative. I owned a Fiat Tempra and loved it. One of the most reliable and practical cars I ever owned.

I still thought this thread was about the guy that plays the mamba though. :rim:
