Mailbox Smashed…

Many state regs follow the federal/postal guidelines that require your mailbox yields to a vehicle collision and breaks away to prevent causing additional harm to the occupants. Pretty easy pickings for an accident lawyer. As far as other structures/objects, that would probably depend on the applicable setback regs, etc.
 
My mailbox story. 92/93 we lived in the sticks on a single lane country road. The house was 100 feet off the road and I could target practice in the back yard (with guns).

I put up a mailbox using a salt treated 4x4 post and 2x6 base board. I used four 3 inch deck screws to attach it to the post and post was 24 or more inches in the ground. Along the bottom of the box 3 deck screws on each side held it on.

One day we’re shooting guns and we can see the box. These kids in a 70’s square body Chevy drove by and hit it with a baseball bat. Hanging out the window swinging it with one arm. Well, they struck it at the box base and it didn’t move and the momentum made the bat come right back around and into the truck, he didn’t let go. Kid screaming in pain. Then a girl in the truck screams Fuck, he’s got a gun. The noise caused me to turn toward them holding the shotgun barrel up in the air. They floored it and hauled. It was hilarious.

For the post you can’t mount it in concrete. No deeper than 24 inches in the ground. The is a very sturdy mount with a standard 4x4 post.
