Latley I've been obsessed with remote wave-washed lighthouses.

I think being on one of these in a storm would be about the most terrifying-yet-awesome things possible. Can you imagine being on a lighthouse on a rock miles from anything, just out there in the ocean? I find the idea fascinating!

Got any good lighthouse photos or stories or thoughts?

My mom is building a lighthouse for a coastal retirement home. Completely pointless and anachronistic, but that's part of the appeal, for her.

If you can find it online the BBC did a brilliant series called 7 wonders of the industrial world and one of the shows is about the building of the Bell Rock lighthouse off the coast of Aberdeen. Fascinating stuff.

Sweet... I'll look for that one.

Lighthouses are cool. My younger brother was in the Coast Guard when we were younger, and he got permission to take me and my mom into the Nantucket Brandt Point Light and the Portsmouth Whaleback. It was really neat stuff. Nantucket is a small stubby light house on the beach, so not exciting, but Portsmouth was kind of like your pictures, if a bit milder.

Here is an animated Gif of Whaleback. It is pretty close to shore, but gets some big wave action.

Those ARE pretty cool. I'd love to see something on how they were built more than anything else.

i don't have a pic....but you can look it up. Stannard Rock lighthouse....it's in off the upper peninsula in lake superior

'Squid, this excellent song was made for you:

When my wife and I travel along the coast, we like to check out the lighthouses. They're all automated these days, it seems, but I'm glad they're still around.
