Johnson Space Center's Astronaut Memorial Grove

Each tree represents an astronaut that died. Every year, the trees are decorated for the holidays. What I never knew until this year is the story behind the red lit tree. It is for Pete Conrad, whose motto was: “When you can’t be good, be colorful.”

I'm guessing all causes of death including natural causes, or are they including cosmonauts? That's a lot of trees.

Very cool though.

18 Astronaut fatalities during space flight related incidents, only 3 of which were "in space".

13 other fatalities as a result of testing and training incidents.

That's 31.

The 3 actual deaths in space were all Cosmonauts.

The astronaut grove is for any deceased astronaut, regardless of cause or flight status at time of death. Pete Conrad, for instance, left NASA in the 70's and died in a motorcycle accident in 1999.

There is also a JSC employee memorial grove on the other side of the street that runs by the main security building and the building 2 parking lot.

Shit, I didn't realize that Lacy Veach had died back in 1995. He was a great guy.
