Dig it! Jeff Beck's guitars

IIRC, the guitar one is an extra on the "Live From Ronnie Scott's" DVD, and yeah, it's pretty cool .

Reminds me - I really should watch that again

Cool. I love the non-Jeff Beck stuff he plays on the L5 at the 6 minute mark.

That L-5 seems to have a regular maple top as opposed to the carved solid spruce. I hate to call out Jeff's recollection, but that looks like an ES-175...a great but a more workman appointed guitar.

His human vibrato on that Gretsch is as consistent as an amp or pedal.

Yeah, imagine if Jeff actually dedicated himself to music? He reminds me of Babe Ruth, Satchel Page, Shaq, and Serena Williams. They were all amazing, but they didn't invest everything they had of themselves into being their best. Yes, good enough to beat everyone else, but without the discipline of many less gifted athletes that worked far harder while achieving far less.

Amazing musician limited only by his current interests.

What? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Must suck for him to be able to be as iconic as he is, even at near 70 years old, yet actually have enough interest in doing other stuff and living life

Maybe use that argument for someone like, say, Hendrix.

I have played that Tele!!!! The first time i met him was in 1995,and after the show he pulled it and a little Fender Champ out and we sat in a semi circle and passed it around. He complimented me on a lick and I about shart myself! eveyone was trying to be Yngiwe Van Satriani and instead i played some James Burton Chicken Picken licks and he even asked which fingers i was using on my right hand to play the lines. i was uh uh uh uh uh uh THESE fingers .

Strange reaction/overreaction. Jeff has stated for years the he prefers working on his cars. He goes years without doing much musically (including even picking up a guitar, according to the man himself) and has stated that it doesn't really phase him. Again, according to his own words, he rarely practices and just plays what he feels like when he feels like playing...at a level which seems less than many folks here and he's Jeff Beck.

So, based on taking him at his word and thinking he's amazing, I'll stand by my notion that it would only stand to reason that if he dedicated himself to playing music on the level of someone as great as Steve Morse, imagine how much more amazing he could be. I chose Morse because he's self proclaimed as obsessive about music...Jeff is closer to my level when it comes to playing time. And it may surprise to you know that I'm no Beck.

Seriously though, why so tense?

Beyond cool and now I have to hate you.

Not strange or tense (except for the weather...), considering how flippant your opening sentence was.

You brought up Ruth, Page, etc. as well. What is your barometer for how much better they theoretically would have been? Some people are just born with whatever it is that allows them to perform at a level above most others. Sure, they may or may not have dedicated themselves to a certain degree, but in any event the assumption that they may have been better by more "dedication" (or that they weren't dedicated enough) is speculation at best - maybe it would have made them better; maybe not.

Here's an example: Joe Bonamassa. I like him. I think he's pretty damned good. Not one of the all-time greats IMO, but I enjoy him quite a bit, and wish I had a fraction of his talent. It seems, though, that he is not as revered, or held in as high esteem as many, many others. Many think he's very derivative (which, frankly, is not difficult to be in this day and age). Yet, he has been a guitar and musical geek to the nth degree since he was a kid. He practices constantly and works his ass off; yet, again, he's not considered one of the greats, iconic, all-timer, what have you, but with your statement, he should be.

yes, being an accomplished polymath is a serious character flaw. just think of what he might have accomplished if more dedicated to guitar (might have even hooked up with some serious bands).

I like cars! and, Babe Ruth did OK (how long did his record stand?)
