what's the deal with that nut? is it some sort of compensated thing for intonation purposes?
 
is there a theoretical or practical reason why compensating at the nut is better than compensating at the bridge (or I assume you have a bit of both with this)

The bridge works for the middle and lower frets, but there are some issues, especially with the G string, in the upper frets that a compensated nut addresses...
 
It arrived with some weird swirl mark/water spot stuff on it like it was cleaned up with some kind of cheap stuff. It was hard to get a pic. Here she is all cleaned up.
