If you have the opportunity to skip it, don't get strep throat.

Ask me how I know. Back to work today finally. That shit sucks ass. I have over two months of sick time built up, I virtually never get sick, but that's the worst I've felt in 20+ years. I especially liked the part where it came out of nowhere and I suddenly went from feeling fine to having a massively sore throat and fever two hours later.

If you've asked yourself "Maybe I'd like to try strep once?" I strongly say no, but that's up to you.

Edit:

You know what the goddamndest thing was I've never experienced before. From Monday night until last night, I was salivating in overdrive. Literally I could spit in a bottle, which is what I was doing, stand up, walk to the bathroom to take a piss, and my mouth was full of saliva again by the time I reached the bathroom.

Mojo. I had it last week. I missed 4 days of work and lost a whole weekend. I felt like shit. I still don't feel 100%, and it has been almost 2 weeks since it started.

Sounds like you had it even worse than me. I felt okay-ish yesterday, symptoms onset Sunday night. Went to the doctor on Monday morning, got amoxicillin at noon, took double the dose to start then every 8 hours. Monday was hideous, didn't get out of bed. Tuesday I could at least sit at the computer and entertain myself some, fever went away, and today I'm back at work.

I had it once when I was maybe 8 or 9 years old, last time I had it.

About 15 years ago I was in such severe pain I thought I was dieing. I was at my sisters place laying on her bed literally crying and moaning waiting for my doctors appt. I couldn't believe it when he told me I had strep. I thought I had some sort of rare, serious flu. Atibiotics fixed me up in a few days....Maybe the worst I've ever felt....

I used to get that shit at least once a year when I was a kid.
Sucks!
Haven't had it in years.

Brutal. I haven't had it in years. But I've got a kid now, so it's probably just a matter of time.

I had strep a few time when I was a kid. Aspirin worked well to treat the pain, but only anti-biotics would get rid of it.

I read it's quite uncommon in adults. Those of who who have had it as adults are special.

Yeaaaaaah. About the aspirin part. I'm not sure you're remember correctly.

:)

It really does very little vs. the sore throat.

I've never had it. My wife got it at least once a year, until her tonsils were removed about 10 years ago. Hasn't had it since.

I have a theory: If you have tonsils, you'll get strep -- if you don't have tonsils, you won't. I had mine out at four and have never had it. My son and wife, who both possess said organs have had it, whilst I and my tonsil-less daughter have not. It's anecdotal, but I've asked a lot of other folks and gotten feedback that indicates to me there may be a correlation. I think that tonsils are germ-collecting pusbags...

I had strep about 20 yr ago. I haven't had tonsils for about 50...so much for the theory

It was bad but not as bad as BS555. I went to work even though I felt like crap. They had just changed the policy of sick time from as needed to from your vacation (PTO)...so I was making a point...

Sadly it didn't work as hoped and make the entire plant ill

I had strep when I was 12 and again when I was 17, and I remember it very well. The Aspirin reduced the pain quite a bit for me. The first time I had strep I didn't know I had it until after a week of not getting better I went to the doctor and he diagnosed it. The 2nd time I got it, I went to the doctor right away since I recognized the symptoms. The sore throat was completely gone after taking the antibiotics for two days, but of course I had to finish up the whole prescription which took another week even though the symptoms were gone.

All I know is waiting it out is not an option.

Mojo.

Like others, I got it a lot as a kid, but not as an adult.

No fun.

This hypothesis is pretty well supported by the medical literature. Oddly enough, the tonsils are lymphoid tissue, and provide defense against infections in the mouth/throat, so it is kind of contrary to common sense. The main issue in the literature is that the most common age of tonsil removal also correlates with decreasing cases of strep throat in kids with tonsils, so separating the single variable of tonsils or no tonsils from repeated immune exposure to strep isn't so easy to do. Some theorize (with good scientific evidence to support the idea) that low levels of strep bacteria can survive in the folds of the tonsil tissue and periodically lead to infection. In some instances, docs treat this with a long dose (a month or more) of antibiotic to clear out this bacteria. In many cases this doesn't work, so removal is suggested.

FWIW, I have my tonsils. This is my first case of strep that I recall. A week of amoxicillin has done a lot to get rid of things, but even after all the meds, I still am only in the 'improving' phase.

My son had chronic ear infections and strep until he was 4. We took him to an ear nose and throat specialist. He quickly said his tonsils need to come out. His analogy that he used was that tonsils are like soldiers in our body-they fight infection. But sometimes they switch sides and fight against your body. He's rarely been sick in last 15 years since they were removed.

QFT -- my (now 23yo) daughter had hers out at four. She was a tiny child, and frequently had ear infections (which we documented and carefully tracked) and had, in fact, become allergic to some antibiotics. She actually LOST weight between the ages of two and three. We basically insisted that the doctor authorize a tonsillectomy, and like your son has rarely been sick since!
