It's a hunk of steel pipe sticking up through the roof next to the electrical lines.

What gives? Did they blow all of their chimney money on frescos or something?
 
Even better, that is a newly installed hunk of pipe, just for this ceremony.

This time they even put in two stoves so as not to mess up the smoke color
 
I think it's just a temporary thing they put up for the occasion. I saw some guys installing it before the conclave began.

I thought they would have some kind of permanently mounted pope-stove or pope-fireplace. I get that you're not electing a new pope all that often, but it's kind of a big deal and they've been doing it for a pretty long time.

Has it always been this way? This is the first time that I recall anything about the papal flue.
 
You would think they would modernize with a red or white spotlight or something. Is the material they burn in the stoves somehow ceremonial? I think MF had a fog machine as a SDOTD a while back, and you can get colored fog juice, so that could be another CO2 friendly/Green option.

I honestly have no idea why this is how they do things, and if it is deeply important/symbolic to the Catholic faith, I apologize for my comments above.

They burn the ballots in a stove after each vote. That's how it began.
Now, they actually have smoke packs made from different stuff that gives off the black or white smoke.
