How they really recorded guitars and bass (James Jamerson!) at Motown

Interesting read. The thing looks like an industrial battery charger we had in the shop when I was a kid for electric forklifts.
 
I would be more interested in learning how JJ came up with all those cool, creative bass lines. Surely there is a simple technique that anyone can learn and use.
 
I've seen that box at the Snakepit in Detroit... that's a tiny room. All those great Motown classics were tracked in a room only slightly larger than your average living room.
