Guitaronomics: How Much Does it Actually Cost to Build a Guitar?

Doug Kauer did a post here on the cost of building a guitar. It was pretty cool too.
 
Nothing surprising in there, it’s basic math. I feel bad for the Chinese workers who are probably making pennies an hour to sand guitars. On the up side guitar finishing jobs probably can’t be given to robots, so at least people will still have that work when every possible stage of building electronics is done by robots. It does leave me with a question; do mom and pop guitar shops still buy through distributors, or do they order direct in small quantities?
