It may have become that, but at one point it was folks having, more or less, reasonable discussions while a handful of mentally ill people went absolutely crazy in public on a daily necessitating escalation and eventual shenanigans.

WesPowell is responsible for the creation of more trolls than the dweebs who invented Dungeons and Dragons.
 
One thing I never got about HC in general was how the moderators let shitstorms go on for days at a time. It was as if some moderators were teenagers... young ones at that.

Moderation didn't come until Musician's Friend bought the place, long after HC had been established. Moderation was necessary, but there was also a desire to not trample on the culture. So unless some idiot started porn bombing the place, it was pretty ok.

Probably the reason why they went on for a while was for pure entertainment value
