Question: guitar do-it-your-selfers: dead fret

friend of mine has a guitar that plays nice, but has a dead note on the 18th fret of the low E-string. 17th fret note sounds out fine, 19th fret note sounds out fine, but dead buzz on the 18th fret.

Yeah, that note on that string will probably never get played in a song, but it bugs him. Is there any tool/tools from Stewmac, or any place, to use to fix that? I noticed the guitar also has just a bit of sharp fret edges on both sides of the fretboard, but nothing to really worry about. What was that tool/file you guys posted about a month ago in another thread to fix that?

Any help appreciated :)

Find a short straight edge that will span 3 frets in that area. See if the 19fret is a little high by rocking the little straight edge with the 19th as the center. If it rocks, the 19th is high and probably making the 18th fret out. It can usually just be tapped down with a small brass hammer.
