Formula 1 preseason testing has started.

6 weeks until the start of the season, I can't wait!!!

The new rules for the lower noses have led to some very ugly looking cars from most of the teams. Here are the cars that have been shown so far:

Yep. Hamilton already put the brand new Merc into the wall at Jerez. Seems like the front wing needs a bit more strength (he lost the wing and the downforce it generated, hence the off track excursion). I guess that is a normal part of testing, but it has to hurt to wreck the new ride before the paint is even dry. He was uninjured, which is good.

The new cars look crazy on the nose end. It will be cool to see what the new pecking order is once the season opens. I hope it isn't a RBR repeat.

Looks like most of the testing so far didn't go so well. Many teams not getting many laps in at all. The first race should be very interesting with the new engines and cars!

The noses take some getting used to, but all F1 cars are beautiful.

The Sahara, Williams and Sauber cars all look fantastic.

The new cars sound awful though. That will take some getting used to as well.

Testing was pretty rough. Red Bull put in like 8 laps or something, followed by a turbo fire. Vettel was one of the slowest cars to set a time, but early testing isn't always about setting fast laps. Anyway, the fast times seemed to be set by Button and Kimi, both of whom managed 40+ laps. A few other surprises in the list of times as well, like Bottas for Williams. How much sandbagging and slow development work was going on versus trying to make a splash with a fast lap isn't clear.

1 J Button McLaren 1m24.165s 43 laps
2 K Raikkonen Ferrari 1m24.812s +0.647s 47 laps
3 V Bottas Williams-Mercedes 1m25.344s +1.179s 35 laps
4 N Rosberg Mercedes 1m25.588s +1.423s 97 laps
5 S Perez Force India-Mercedes 1m28.376s +4.211s 37 laps
6 E Gutierrez Sauber-Ferrari 1m33.270s +9.105s 53 laps
7 M Ericsson Caterham-Renault 1m37.975s +13.810s 11 laps
8 S Vettel Red Bull-Renault 1m38.320s +14.155s 8 laps

Mercedes seems to have the most reliable powerplant this year so far, with Ferrari right behind. Renault looks like they are in trouble though right now.

Renault has been having electrical issues for a few straight years now. Seems like possibly the same alternator problem that has been an ongoing cause of concern since the 2011 season. You would think they'd have it sorted by now.

Yeah, I agree. I want to see Williams do much better this year. They have had a really long dry spell, considering their impressive history. Hopefully, an experienced driver and a shake up of car design will help them.
