Floyd Rose (Edge Pro) won't stay in tune.

weird musical dildo
Having a lot of issues keeping my Prestige in tune, even with light use of the vibrato bar... whammy tricks will send it out of tune quickly, but only by a couple of cents and not uniformly across the strings. Every other day or so I have to unlock the nut and retune from scratch and even after doing that I need to adjust the fine tuners. It has new strings on it (they were stretched) and currently has four springs in the back. Any ideas? :annoyed:

Fucking Ibanez. :embarrassed:

Seriously though, it kind of sounds like the knife edges might be dull.

Can you pull up on the bar and get it back in tune after a divebomb?

Also, if there are big temperature swings, it'll throw the guitar out of tune.

Check that the trem baseplate is level with the guitar top. If it is angled, the edge will suck at returning to pitch correctly. Google Edge Pro setup, there are pics and setup instructions at Ibanez Rules and Jemsite. This one simple tip saved me tons of frustration with my edge terms.

Huh!
I had an Edge put on a Squier Strat years ago, and it held tune beautifully.

How long has it been since it's had a good going-over by a good tech?

My feeling is something in the locking nut is binding the string, or the saddle/clamp is worn. Is it all strings, or just a certain string?

All the strings. I've thought about packing her up when I have some cash and sending it to Tele to have him go over it and put in some Bareknuckles.

if you can't get it to where it needs to be, take it back to the store and have the tech fix it... that's what i would do...

but don't let 6 weeks pass before you get it back... that would suck

I won't let the GC tech touch my guitar.

My three theories:
  1. Strings slipping from saddles
  2. Strings slipping through nut
  3. Burr on the knife-edge or stud

My guess is the nut.

Those knife edges are hardened steel, and generally machined very well, which is why they work so well and have the fan base they do, the nut, not so well machined.

That being said..........floyds are a royal PITA as they are, even the best. You can't exactly run down the problem by a single string because one string goes off, they all go off. Gilmour is correct, it's one of those. I'd be less inclined to think that it would be at the bridge saddle.

Get some nut lube and give it another whirl. Now, if that doesn't solve the issue, you might want to take a look at the knife edges and nut with a magnifying glass. It might just be that for whatever reason, the locking nut just isn't locking them.

It's been a while since I did a floyd setup, but especially floyds, strings seem to take a while to set so to speak. I used to restring with the deck of cards method, remove, and just go nuts for 15 minutes, retuning a good 6-8 times before they finally set in, make sure my string level/angle/tension was on target, then i'd lock it.

I'd still do some lube or pencil shavings in the locking nut slots just to be safe.

  3. Burr on the knife-edge or stud

It is one or multiple of those 3 for sure.

Also, I grab each string at the 12th fret and pull it up until you think it would break and it is done stretching after that. I can restring and set the intonation in 20 minutes on a Floyd guitar. Once you figure it out, they are pretty simple.
