I've seen them do this after hurricanes. They usually build up on something floating, like in the photo.
 
It's actually pretty dangerous when they do that.

As if having to wade through floodwaters isn't bad enough with snakes and disease and your house flooded, you might get swarmed by ants and bit 1,000,000 times.

I've seen 'em the size of basketballs. You get into one and it can be fatal.

Yep. It never hurts to have a few sealed up Benadryl tablets around. It could help delay anaphylactic shock. We also have adult ans child epi-pens for the super oh-shit possibility.
