Favorite Drummer?

Steve Jordan is one of my favorite drummers. For rock and stuff, I'm heavily influenced by Steve, Josh Freese, Abe Laboriel Jr. and John Bonham (of course). What I love about these guys is that they can lay down a solid groove in any context and it always feels good. They can bash just like the rest of 'em but with all the finesse and groove in the world. And Steve Jordan's concept of timefeel and drumming in general has really changed my approach. I recommend his video "The Groove Is Here" to non-drummers all the time because it isn't an instructional DVD; it's just him playing with people and talking about his concept -- check out the interviews with Levon Helm!

Our lists are pretty similar :)

I've been having to cover the drum chair in my Monday night James Brown Funkmasters class the last 3 weeks and having to play Cold Sweat for a couple of hours has really given me a huge appreciation for Clyde Stubblefield, too...

Luckily I have charts for these songs..If I couldn't read the music there wouldn't have been anyway for me to actually figure out that groove and play it in the time allotted for the class....

I saw Nina Nastasia and Jim White a couple years back. White's a great player. Phenomenal touch. Almost melodic.

I have to give credit to Bonham for keeping up with Page, and the3 rest of them. Bonham WAS a very creative drummer, and to me that counts more than mind blowing technique. It was interesting in the movie "It May Get Loud" Page did not mention Plant, or John Paul Johns once, but he mentioned Bonham TWICE.

I do like the dude in Them Crocked Vlutures.

No one has mentioned Meg White?

I'd have to go with Bonham. That guy is flat out insane. Cozy Powell is pretty cool too.

No love for Keith Moon here?

Definitely Love Kieth Moon.

One of my alltime favorite rock Drummers besides Bonzo is most definitely Tommy Alrdidge.

Seriously. The dude is a fucking baddass and even though he may not be a household name, he has certainly made a name for himself, especially for any Rock drummer old enough to be familiar with his work. for me, playing rock for decades and knowing a ton of drummers, there is no other rock drummer that I have heard mentioned more than Tommy Aldridge when drummer friends of mine talk about thier favorite drummers.

He is one of the only drummers I have ever heard that can play basically what almost amounbts to a drum solo in the middle of any song, from the beginning of the song, all through the song, and till the end of the song without it sounding like it is too much, or out of place, or too busy, or like some drummer trying to wank all over a good song. He is a freeking machine when it comes to chops, power, stamina, and ALWAYS seems to play exactly the right part at every second of every song.

Those not familier with who he is, do yourself a favor and check him out.

Neal Peart. That guy can play like no one else I've seen.

Big +1 on this. :thu:

Bonham/Moon/Starr

They are the classic rock trifecta.

As far as current guys on the scene, definitely Grohl. His work on QOTSA Songs for the Deaf cemented him high up in my list of all time favorite drummers. Danny Carey and Taylor Hawkins are up there too.

the name escapes me just now because ronson gets so much credit but whoever drummed on ziggy stardust was pretty solid.

Neil Peart
Mike Portnoy (or Porntoy, if you prefer  )

J.J Johnson , Carter B, and Steven Jordan are also constantly having to go off the improv of dave and john, since both are artist that play songs differently from night to night, and almost always fall in place correctly on a nightly basis.

I cannot fucking believe it took 31 posts for Neil to be mentioned, cliched as it may be.

I also cannot believe it has taken 39 posts for someone to mention Bill fucking Bruford :gah:
