The garam masala used by Manhattan street vendors smells amazing. At home I love the way dried fenugreek smells when it's sauteed (often in garam masala).
 
Onions and garlic being fried in butter

yeah this might be it although if you've ever smelled those Mexican rotisserie chicken places then you would probably agree with me that that is the correct answer....honestly it should be illegal! You drive anywhere near one , even a 1/4 mile away and you smell the smokey goodness...mmmmmm :drool:
 
even though I never eat them, the street vendors out here grilling hot dogs wrapped in bacon - they smell pretty damn good

other than that, I agree with the onions and garlic fried in butter

and bread

There are a bunch of vendors in San Jose outside Avaya stadium on game days selling those. I've never tried one, but someday, it will be mine...
