Eddie Van Halen on Surviving Addiction, Why He's Still Making Music and What He Really Thinks of Dav

Sometimes I wonder if Eddie is on the autism spectrum or had some sort of cerebral deformity, like Eienstein did. It seems a lot of the world-changing geniuses are difficult to get along with.

+1 Everybody who's different has autism.
Not that he's different, but he has specific markers like his absolute obsession with music to the point of choosing that over being social with people, and just general social issues.

I have a nephew who's very possibly well into the spectrum and my sister-in-law is a special education teacher, so she pointed things like that out to me.

I think autism is way too often diagnosed. Any kid who is the least bit socially awkward or focused intently on something is diagnosed with autism.
Agreed, there is a vast difference between have an intense interest and an obsession, though. And if you knew my nephew, you wouldn't doubt it.

Somebody tried to say my 5-year-old had ADHD. I was like "Have you met many 5-year-olds? If they don't act like this I worry." LOL

I'm surely not somebody that believes that everybody has something... But I do think Ed is somewhere in there. And this is speaking as somebody who's fairly obsessed with Van Halen. LOL

Well the problem with an autism diagnosis, is that it is such a broad spectrum that almost anyone can be placed on it. I am glad it is getting attention so it gets research dollars to better define it and find ways to help people who are on the spectrum better. Both my kids were diagnosed to be on the spectrum, when they were younger and while they still have some markers, I wouldn't consider them on it anymore. I really hate labels but they need to re-label the disorder and break it up into different classes or names.

Autism as a blanket term and diagnosis is no doubt overused and abused. It is also unfortunately very misunderstood and dismissed by a large portion of the public.

Until you are faced with raising a child on the spectrum, I suppose it's easy to scoff at. Complete morons like Jenny McCarthy who use their celebrity to push their ill informed and delusional opinions on people as scientific fact don't help.

Regarless, it is a very real thing with exceptionally broad symptoms and levels of severity.

I have no doubt that Eddie is somewhere on the soectrum. He certainly has some marquee Aspergers type of outward signs.

Here's the rub...

Some forms of Autism make the individual behave like an asshole, and it is unquestionably the Autism that makes it so difficult for the individual to modify or even acknowledge that behavior.

Some people are just assholes who also happen to land on the spectrum.

Meet Eddie Van Halen: asshole, autism sufferer.

I wish Jenny McCarthy would go away forever.

Pathology is fun and easy.
I have a little bit of knowledge/experience. I'm not talking out of my ass.

You spend a few years taking your child to specialists, paying out of pocket for them to see Doctors whose parking lots are filled with Mercedes SLRs, Porsches, Ferraris and your 8 year old Nissan Pathfinder, you pick up a thing or two. You're also less likely to make an ill informed, snide remark that paints you as a douchebag.

It's a win/win.

EVH certainly seems to have what appears to be some sort of anti-social type disorder. Autism? No idea.

I know my middle nephew out of 3 had/has a mild form of aspergers/autism, even though it wasn't diagnosed. Fairly anti-social, wouldn't hug anyone when he was a baby/little kid, would for example pee his pants while playing a video game rather than just hit pause and go to the bathroom, would only eat certain foods, starving himself if those weren't available, etc etc. He got good grades thru school though.

Now he's in college, and since being away from family is really opening up from what I hear. Trying new foods, making friends, just coming out of his shell, really.
