DESCRIPTION:
A Marriage of Technology and Craftsmanship
To craft their guitars, Blackwater uses a combination of Auto CAD drafts with CNC technologies, as well as old-school craftsmanship. The computerized manufacturing processes are used where the guitars benefit from the consistency and accuracy inherent therein (fingerboard slotting and inlay work, neck carves, pickup routes and bridge placement). Hand crafting is used where it matters and will be appreciated by the end user (the contours and carves and the final fit-and-finish of the instrument). This combination offers the best of both worlds - instruments that have the feel of a hand-crafted instrument with the accuracy and consistency of a factory-built guitar. Everyone wins!
While not as high-tech as the CNC technology Blackwater utilizes in its shop, the Erlewine-style fret dressing jig is worth noting. The jig works by clamping the entire guitar down and then simulating the tension of strings tuned to pitch. This allows for increased accuracy during the fret dressing process which in turn allows for a much more playable guitar. And it offers the added benefit of making it easier to perform the fret leveling process due to the fact that the guitar and neck aren't sliding all over the place while the stainless steel frets are installed. Happy luthiers build better guitars!
The standard neck carve on a Blackwater is the Soft-C profile. It's a thin neck profile, but rather than a flat back, it has a soft elliptical shape that extends into the binding/edge of the fingerboard. It is extremely comfortable and ergonomic, and offers the best of a shreddy neck combined with a more rounded vintage profile.
