Are there rules to writing a "bridge" for a song?

I don't know if there are "rules" as much as the idea that a bridge takes you away from the main idea of a song. If I am working on a song in a major key I might start the bridge on a minor chord in the key just to make some contrast...here is a chord chart from my song "Over Pennsylvania"

You can see that most of the song is in G major but the solo starts on E minor (which is the "relative minor key in G major") and the bridge starts on Am and then the song returns to G major...
