Are any of you guys Posers? (3D modeling/animation software)

I've seen recently some pics on the web that were made by using Poser 3D software that looked pretty good, and I am now considering getting the basic Poser (Poser Debut) that comes with a tutorial and whatnot. It, the Debut, is fairly cheap, under $50. Poser 9 is roughly $175, and Poser 2012 is something like $500

Has any one ever used this program, or others that are similar? I'm no artist by any means. All my brothers and sisters can draw pretty well, and my brother Geoff is a professional artist, but the drawing bug never bit me :( But I figure this thing comes with a tutorial, how hard can it be? ( cop0 )

I can picture all the dragons and elf maidens I can 3D render now..... :)

I used several editions of Poser when I was working with 3D studio Max and a few other rendering software products. The posing software and lighting works extremely well, but wrapping color maps and texture maps over the figure can be a bit tricky. Not to mention lining up 3D objects.

It's much easier if you're making a 2D image... when you try to do 3D animation, it can be very tedious and some keyframe animation can be frustrating when there's a hicup or weird movement you're trying to smooth out.

I probably wont be wanting to do much, if any animation. Just images, at least for now. Is creating your own objects, clothes, models and such fairly easy with Poser? or do you have to stick with whatever templates that come with the program?

I don't know about the latest versions... the versions I used had some clothing and accessories options, but I often used programs like HammaPatch to create my own 3D objects to upload into the images.

There are also some good 3D resources like 3DCafe where you can get pre-made objects to upload into the picture.

Just looked and saw that they're on versions 8 and 9 now. I used it back in 2, 3, and 4... maybe 5. I am familiar with the current layout but it looks like there are some serious deforming and texturing tools that didn't exist in the versions I used.

I just ordered the Debut. With shipping it was still under $50, the price of a video game.

I figure it'll be something to mess with for now, and see what I can come up with. I wonder what the difference between the 3 versions are, and what my 'Debut' won't be able to do that the other 2 versions will?

There's a chart on one of the pages comparing editions.... but that basic version is probably more advanced than the ones I paid hundreds of dollars for all those years back.

Got yer poser right here:
