Another Auroral Timelapse from the Event on August 16th

On August 15th 2015 I ended up going to Boulder Lake Dam which is north of Duluth Minnesota since conditions were ripe for a big auroral show and boy this did not dissappoint:

It started with auroras happening while it was still daylight and went late into the night. At about 10:30 p.m. it was one of the most powerful storms I ever witnessed.

As this was happening, a big thunderstorm was moving in from the west and the biggest challenge was the fact that there were about 16 other photographers there all trying to shoot this event some affiliated with the Upper Midwest Aurora Chasers, some affiliated with the Great Lakes Aurora Chasers and some were just local residents.

Guessing there was about a total of 30 people there just watching. After a while it was challenging to try and shoot without getting into others field of view or they in yours.

The first shot has the trees lit by the powerful security lighting at the dam. It almost looks like day. We found a better place to shoot later.

Here is a shot of some of the photographers trying to capture the aurora.

At one point, a powerful proton arc covered the whole sky from northwest to southeast - here's the camera pointing to the southeast - it was white and these are a rarer type of aurora that are caused by more powerful protons instead of electrons that usually generate the auroral displays.

Wow. That's the kind of thing you see up near the arctic circle not so far south. Must have been a helluva solar storm
