Nothing sounds as strat-like as a strat, so I can see where you're coming from. But that's just one guitar in one tuning.

When my last band started doing tunes with different tunings, that was my tipping point. E, drop D, E flat, drop D flat, open G, open E, humbucker, tele, strat, dobro, acoustic all with the turn of two knobs trumps that extra little straty-ness or tele-ness of the real thing. For me, at least.

Maybe. But I prefer the modeled detuning since dropping a whole step on the fly sounds like ass in real life.

I have never tried a modeling guitar. I would have to before committing. But I don't like cherry clown burst in any guitar.
