Exclamation The Flute of Shame - punishment for bad musicianship

The "flute of shame" is a medieval contraption inflicted upon bad musicians at a time when public humiliation was a ruler's means of invoking fear in the people he controlled. Not only was it imposed upon displeasing musicians, but public performs in general who were deemed lewd, offensive, or bothersome. The device would be fitted around the subjects neck, with the fingers clamped tightly along the flute, where it could remain for days.

We kind of have this now, it is called the chapman stick. I guess it is more of a voluntary thing, but the sense of isolation and banishment among the players remains.

I like this flute. I am glad they didn't use it on her.

But what about Jethro Tull, think that Ian Anderson was forced to wear one at some point?

In the mid-twentieth century, offending "musicians," also known as "harp players," were frequently accosted by actual musicians and strapped into this contraption:

Often for days. Extreme offenders were also taken to a local pond and set adrift in what is known as the "Boat of Fail."

Prior to that, in the earlier part of the last century, this device was applied to the malfeasors:

However, the general populace found that a tad too harsh. Or too funny. It is unclear.
