Default Fall Recordingfest - The 80's!!!

The loose theme is "1980's" although we've decided that can include any song recorded before Nirvanas Nevermind was released

Have the songs to me by September 22nd and the reveal is September 23rd!

Question - Do we need to claim a song so someone else doesn't do the same song?

You could always mention it if you think there's a chance it will happen....I don't see a problem with multiple versions of the same song if you don't anyway

    Slow thread is slow

I'll be submitting at least 2 songs in addition to the big Whitesnake collab

Both being among my all time favourite songs

I should probably think about doing something for mine.

Hey Mark, I've got Dex's drums and Mike's bass part. Do you need me to mix those together so you can do the guitar tracks or are you going to be able to do that and then just send me the guitar tracks when they are done?

What I'm really asking is, are you waiting for me, or am I waiting for you?

oops....I didn't realize I was in the hotseat...I'm not sure I have all of the parts....I just cleaned my mailbox and I think I screwed up and erased them just now Can you send them to me and I can get started?

I can't right now, but I'll try to get the drums and bass mixed in the next day or two and send that to you.

Depending on how difficult the drum part is, I'm game.

    Progress report:

Well, we've got another really short and rather strange tune on the go..surprise, surprise ...I've got most of the music sorted, but Lisa is still working on the tune/lyrics..I think we'll be ready, we've both got some time off coming up..so hopefully nail it all down then.

I scrapped the original one I was working on temporarily... the arrangement I was working on just wasn't happening, so I moved on to something I started working on for an HC 80's Coverfest ins '07, but never finished.

Bounced out all the files from Sonar and imported them into Logic. There are a couple of glitches and artifacts, but nothing too bad. I'll definitely need to re-record the bass line, I still need to do pre-chorus guitars, and cut vox.

Time permitting I'm going to finish ANOTHER cover I started in '07 and never finished... it came out in '88 but mine is more a cover of a cover with alt.country spin. If I don't get it done in time for the Coverfest I'll post it anyway, because I've forgotten how excited I was about that track.

Where are you guys all at?

I'm exactly where I was last time I checked in.

I did mix Dexter's drum track and Micwalt's bass track and sent them to Mark. That's as far as we've gotten so far.

I'm in the hot seat for RonK right now, and plan to get his drums recorded tomorrow evening, as I should have some free time.

Haven't even given thought to starting a solo entry yet.

    Neither have I....

I'm torn between doing something more rock, or one of the older country tunes that we are learning. One of the country tunes has some killer harmonies and is pretty easy to play - except for the keyboard part. I can do all the guitars, bass, and vocals though (I think I can do all the BG vocals....).

But since country is about as popular here as the H1N1....I may opt for something else. I just don't know what yet...

Last night I did the drums for a song RonK is working on.

I also have a quirky idea for another 80s cover to do, but I need to get my hands on a copy of it so I can learn it, then I have to learn it, and change everything about it.

    Heh...

One of the drummers at Pragestock left his double bass pedal.

I've recorded a drum track now...with lots of kick drum tripplets.

    The original song had none.

Of course, I don't think it had any guitar either.

It's going to be a little different from the original.

Crap, this song is way harder to sing than I thought it would be. I apparently have no upper register.

I wonder if I can try it an octave lower?

Just got done with the music for the second one I'm working on.
If I don't fuck up the vocals (which are...quite hard to sing - it's a Queen song ), it will rock your socks off

Just vocal tracking and mixing left on both songs

I got a good bit done yesterday. Actually, other than a few small embellishments, I got all the tracking done.

Depending on how well I can get it mixed, though, I may redo all the guitar and vocal tracks before I call it done. I'll have to listen to it with fresh ears and see.

    Gaaahhh!

I may never get this done. This weekend we are moving the two kids OUT of the basement and into the two other bedrooms upstairs, and my music room is moving down to the basement. On the plus side - I will probably end up with twice as much space in the long run, which is good since I want to buy drums. On the negative side, we have exactly two outlets in the entire full (unfinished) basement. And I could not wire one in to save my own life....

So if this all gets done this weekend I might (might...) have time to record something before the deadline.

    Maybe....

I'm still hoping to try for this one, but haven't got anything even started yet. Been working pretty much 7 days a week, 10 and 12 hour days. I'm going to try to do something, though even if it's just a short solo piece or something.

I've been struggling to just get any practice time in, and haven't had any time to even think about recording. Keep saying I"m going to, and either haven't been able to find the time, or can't seem to play anything worth recording. Not planning on giving up, though.

Ok, so Coverfest Idea #4 is almost full realized! All I have to do now is record vocals... everything else I finished up about three minutes ago. I even did a really rough instrumental mix so I can listen to it some tomorrow and see how I feel about it with fresh ears. I know I'll have to do a final mix, but it's always good to gain some advance perspective.

Oh, I'd also like to say that this is the first thing I've ever done completely in Logic, from recording to mixdown. The whole way of working has been different from how I'm normally work, so I'm excited/nervous to hear what you guys think.
