Ban the bike couriers in their spandex sausage casings!!!
There are many worse driver distractions......just saying.
Yet another friend of Jack...
I hope she didn't get on the bus or subway wearing that skirt, though. Good way to get a venereal disease.
Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy, I like him just fine--but he's a mouthbreather.
Would.
The cop just wanted a better look.

Why has nobody mentioned the picture of the singer from The Pretty Reckless at the bottom of the page?

it doesn't even say where she was riding. if it was on the Brooklyn Bridge, like in that shot, then the only people she was distracting were the pedestrians who were walking on the wrong side of the line that seperates the bike lane from the walking lane.
no drivers are going to notice her skirt. well, maybe when they hit her as she speeds through a red light. but that's it.
Good marketing if you ask me.
Cool bike, too.

there's about 4 or 5 places in Brooklyn that hipsters live. Williamsburg, Bushwick, Greenpoint, Red Hook, and Fort Greene. Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Prospect Park, etc are all yuppies. The rest of Brooklyn isn't exactly someplace you want to be. Bedford Stuyvesant, East New York, Crown Heights, Flatbush, Rockaway, etc. not exactly destinations for hipsters. or anybody that doesn't want to get shot.

What about all the incredibly uncool nabes like Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, and so forth? I can't imagine that they're dangerous.
Also, I've read that Flatbush--or at least Ditmas Park--is becoming increasingly popular as a place for hipsters to move when they get married and have kids. They buy Victorian single- and two-family houses and fix them up. Basically, it's what Park Slope was 20 years ago.

Anyhow to bring the thread back on topic... Confuscius say, "Man who get between girl and bicycle seat in Brooklyn end up in Flatbush."
I saw some of those bikes when we were over in Holland late March and April, along with tons of other cool bikes. A lot of folks commute around on the old Batavus frame styles that have been built since the war. The whole country nearly was set up for cycle transport, and the people just ride around everywhere. Except for club type riding, no one is wearing cycling gear, or even helmets most of the time. We did a really fun bike tour, GPS guided, from Haarlem to Leiden to Gouda to Utrechte (sp?) and a train ride to Amsterdam then back to Arnhem where we were based out of. Really nice way to see the country, and nice easy family cycling, what with it being so flat. The only disappointment was the beer. Not much going on there. They all drink Heineken, which to me is just holland style budweiser.
Bay Ridge is for when you want to get beat up by Italians and Irish people.
Bensonhurst is definitely not a place you want to go.
Dyker Heights sounds like a rough place. a rough, embarrassing for males place.
Ditmas Park is definitely changing in that Park Slope manner. but because of the Park Slope comparison, it's more yuppies than hipsters. hipsters don't fix anything. or breed. they just make things trendier.

When did the helmet thing start? I understand it if you're mountain biking, trail riding that kind of thing, but now all of the kids wear them riding around the neighborhoods. What a bunch of sissys. If I showed up on my bike wearing a helmet, the other kids would have used it to beat me.
And you city boys make fun of us hicks for being trashy.

Helmets became widely used beginning in the late '80s after Giro helmets received a boost from Lemond's win in the tour. That was the beginning of the light, foam style, helmet thing. They since have since become almost mandatory in the sense that you are seen as a bad parent if you send your kid out on a bike without one. Having fallen hard and seen how a helmet can help save a face, much less a head, I wear one. these pics would have been a lot worse without one.
Notice how the upper part of my face was protected by the front edge of my helmet. That helmet has all sorts of gravel ground into the front now.
I'm pretty sure brain protection ranks higher in the evolutionary table than not looking like a sissy.
The problem with being on a bike isn't necesarilly anything you do, but the amount of fuckwits in cars that are not paying attention, intentionally or unintentionally put cyclists in dangerous positions and generally creating a situation where if you don't go out with a hat, you're asking for big trouble.
I cringe every time I see a person out on the road without a helmet, even a relatively minor accident could kill them if they fall the wrong way.
I agree with all of that, and I wear a helmet when riding on the road or trail riding. What Im talking about is my neighbors kid who are 11 12ish who ride up and down their 1/2 mile driveway at half a mile an hour wearing a helmet. Just seems overly couscous to me.![]()
Then again I still play drop in hockey without a helmet so what do I know.
I haven't been back to Fort Green since living there in 89'. No gentrification at that point. Crack dealers on the corner and gun play on my block were the order of the day. Come to think of it that was the last time I owned a car in the city. The fecker was broken into nightly and ended up being stolen from in front of my building.
