Thread: Maybe someone should host a Suckstock

Default Maybe someone should host a Suckstock

I would be way less intimidated to show up.

It scares me when guys like Dave seem intimidated to play and guys like Baimun complain about sucking.

Not that I could go to anything this summer...just sayin.

Trust me, there are many 'suck' moments scattered throughout the weekend. You just don't realize it until you watch the video.

We played Man in the Box on Saturday night last year and everybody thought it was AWESOME.

Watched the video back on Sunday and baimun, Dave, and I were all like "WTF was that?"

One of my college bands covered that song. I feel sorry for anyone who has to sing it. Every time we got to the chorus, the singer would belt out "feeeeeeed my eyes..." and you could see the crowd all move back at the same time. Kind of like those clips of people in a movie theater being scared at the same time.

I just don't know that many classic rock songs. Every rehearsal and show with the country band I'm playing with an awesome guitar player (the lead player can bring it....) so I'm used to that. Being in the blues/rock band will help with the lead playing as well. So not really intimidated. Heck, I played bass last year for a good chunk of Friday night and I rarely ever play bass.

I hear ya steak. I definitely suck and would definitely be intimidated but I guess if I were going to play with a bunch of good players, I'd prefer it be this group.

I cant pull off P-Fest or suck fest either.

You really have to be there to understand. The jamming isn't about sounding good. It's about having fun. I'm pretty sure that everybody who has ever showed up (that was a forum member anyway) has played at least a handful of songs. It doesn't matter if you actually know the song or not. The way it usually works is that one person knows the song pretty well, one or two have played it before, and a couple are pretty much just jumping in and trying to keep up. That's the beauty of it. When it works it's magical, even if it sounds like shit.

Oh trust me, i barely know which end of the guitar to hold. There is enough just general farting around that someone like me can fumble along and have fun, then when the guys get their game on, i can sit back and enjoy it.

That's my impression of Pragestock as well, and I haven't even been to one. Yet.

And I can guarantee that all of us have sucked many many times. Well most of us - I'm not sure about that micwalt fella.

I assure you, steak, I felt the same way as you. And I know I sucked while I was there. I cant improv worth shit, and I didnt know most of what they played. Nobody seemed to notice and everyone is too cool to say it if they did. Its a good time. Honestly, I count Weiners as friends (First person to sig that is gonna get a bag of doggie doo on their porch ) and it wasnt any different at Greg's house than it is here. I dont feel uncomfortable or self-conscious here on the forum everyday, and I didnt feel uncomfortable or self-conscious there.(well, ok, a little self conscious playing everyone's really beautiful guitars like crap but no big thing).

The ONLY thing at P-stock that actually surprised me was EXACTLY how much like themselves everyone is in person. Seriously.... I expected it to be a little weird at first. It isnt. It's exactly like here, just without the smilies.

Dude, seriously, if you are comfortable enough hanging out here everyday, you'd be totally cool at Greg's. Hell, we'd probably even still call you steak for a while You'd have fun jamming.

Then again my step-mom was a Norwegian immigrant so I was raised around the language. Not that I can speak it, but the pronunciations are not that foreign. I just don't remember how the å is pronounced.

å is very close to how you pronounce o

The "slåen" part of my last name could be pronounced "sloan", and you'd get really close.

You really do have a headstart being somewhat familiar with the language.

I always find it a little uncomfortable playing in those kinds of situations, too. That's why I'd like to play host, sometime; I'd really enjoy cooking for everyone, getting everyone drunk, etc., and then pounding out a number or two when I feel like it.

I'd love to make it to Pragestock some day, though I don't see it happening.
I wouldn't give a rat's ass that everyone can outplay me.
I'd just Kerry King over the top of it all.

hey, if Micwalt can use Hammet as a verb...

The thing is about guitar playing is that it is so versatile. Yeah, some one could nail a cover song note for note. Yet have them play flamenco style. Have the flamenco player play jazz and they would suck compared to a jazz player, to a blues player, to a flatpicker, to a classical player.

I suck at taking leads on a I V VII progression, but I think my strength is in my right hand more then my left. I can't shred, but finger picking comes naturally to me. I play live and even strum with the backs if my nails as opposed to a pick.

So yeah, technically speaking we all suck at guitar, but we're all pretty good from our own perspective of it.

And for the record, whoever thought of Pragefest was more interested in getting together for the real life laughs and fun then for a guitar camp setting. So don't use suck as an excuse not to go. If your not up to playing then don't. But I'm willing to bet that I'd you show up you'll eventually play anyway because that's the way we Weiners roll.
