I don't love it, but it isn't that time-consuming, relatively speaking, I can work from home, and it leaves me with a lot of freedom w/r/t time. And money, I guess. Though that cuts in on free time. Not that I'm complaining.
After leaving the military I worked for about 3 years for companies, but I knew one thing, I wanted to be my own boss.
I succeeded and never been happier. Being your own boss gives you true freedom in life.
Was able to pack the bags when I was still in my 30's and move to my wife's country and there too we open our own business. Now, we really should be retired these days, but we work mainly to have something to do and of course to bring in a little bread
I always thought when I was working for a company, why am I making this (person.company) money and I make little money. I really hated that feeling.

LOVE it except for the 5-9am, 3-6pm weeks. But I know this kickass job just cannot last forever.

don't know, haven't started yet.
but I don't imagine I'll love it.
so long as I don't come home with the urge to hang myself, it's all good.
problem for me is I've never really had anything I really wanted to do.
apart from the rock star thing, of course
was close to opening a toy store before I bought the house in the sticks.
but the town I was in just wouldn't get enough business for it to really work.
and I wasn't willing to move back to a bigger city.
that, and I'd end up keeping all my stock anyways...
I don't have any real skills/trades as far as work goes.
nothing I'd want to do for a living, anyways.
so, I'll likely end up working shit jobs for the rest of my life.
but I'm okay with that.
at least the place I start at on Monday has some room for upward mobility.
though I'm taking a $2+/hr cut from my last job, and will likely have to work (physically) a lot harder.
*shrugs*
when MUNG was gigging on a regular basis, we made good cash.
better than I ever have at a "real" job.
but the lifestyle was killing me, I think.
I love my job. My only complaints are that the hours can be insanely long (typically 70-80 hrs a week, or more) and the work is mentally draining.
No, I can't say I love it. It's an ok one most of the time, and occasionally stressful.
Pay is not at all good though, which is one major reason why I'm considering switching jobs these days.
Well, that, and my back and knees doesn't enjoy that type of work much after over 13 years...
Probably not. I've had all sorts of jobs with varying levels of compensation. Never really been happy with any of them. I mean, it's somebody else's crap. They're paying you to do it because it sucks and is boring. Not that I have any inclination to self-employ. That just seems like sentencing yourself to grubbing for petty amounts of cash while practicing for the big time grabber that mocks all you've worked to achieve.
Yea. It's in an industry that's dying a slow death to outsourcing, but I still like to do it while I can....![]()
I'm happy enough. I've been lucky with being in the right place at the right time with the right skills to have stayed employed in this line of business when so much is being outsourced. I could probably push myself more in order to earn more..but I'm not motivated enough to do that. The pay is fine by me, I've never chased the money, and as long as I can afford the odd HNGD!..I'm easy to please.![]()

My job blows. 100% blows.
I do like the other jobs I have- politics, gigging, managing properties, and the fact that my wife runs her own business has benefits too. The property management is set up as an LLC separate from my wifes. But it's not my main source of income.
This +10000, I've stated many times that I'm not happy with my current job but then again I don't think I'll ever be happy with any job. perhaps I should become a truckdriver and ride the roads with my dog. I'll be like the old tv show BJ and the Bear except it'll be DdBob and the dog![]()

I sure hope Mrs. P doesn't see this thread today.
She's having a rough one.
I love the teaching aspect, but dealing with the bookkeeping, answering all the emails and questions can be a pain in the ass. I have an email right now that is #19 from a lady who wants to sign up her son for lessons.![]()

For the most part I love what I do, although I wish I could concentrate on the music and fun internet parts and not so much on the admin of the business.

wait until you have to pay a commercial lease, 8 teachers and two employees, workers comp insurance, business insurance, state sales tax, repairs on the facility or equipment because people idiots and other fun "owner" type things. Plus you only have one set of unhappy customers. I have 9 to hear from.

I like my job, it's 7 miles from my house, not allot of pressure, pretty cool boss. 4 people total in my dept. Most state jobs don't pay all that well like in my case, but the benefits are good and my wife does better than myself and is on my benefits package. We also have a couple of property investments that keep us busy with up keep and all, but my regular job is ok![]()
LMA is run a bit differently. My mum and her partners forward us prospective students, handle advertising, event set-up, etc. We rent studio space and agree to participate in recitals, etc. but teachers set their own rates, do their own bookkeeping, scheduling, etc. I used to teach at a shop that was run a little more like how you run things and yeah, that is stressful as shit.

Not really. It's ok in the sense that I'm basically my own boss as it's just near enough freelance stuff, but it's so fucking boring and there's hardly any work coming in. I don't really like web designHave another London interview tomorrow so staying optimistic even though I bet they'll go for someone who already lives in London

WHat in the world would give you that idea honey. I mean I just had to call you to tell you to make sure that no one in our family or nothing in our lives went wrong on November the 5th, because my co-worker feels that I have been letting the ball drop a bit too much lately, I mean I missed a whole day of work where he had to do something (Alter two whole freaking tables, that someone else did anyway), because my freaking dog had the discourtesy to die during the last conversion. He just wants to make sure that I am going to be here on the 5th and not have to take anymore sick days, I mean god forbid he have to do any god forsaken thing to help me out a little. So could I just let him know now if I think I am going to be sick that day so that he can just go ahead and be prepared for it...
and yes I just used the "..." symbol

in hindsight, I'm sure that phone call must have taken you by complete blindside, and I hung up on you before you heard me tell him to Go Fuck himself in his Fucking Face.
Thanks Weinboard for broadening my vocabulary.
I really like mine. I do IT work in the public school system, so I am not making anyone money. The hours are great for IT, 8 to 5 with no after hour support and I get all of the big vacations (like x-mas and spring break). So I get a ton of time off when my kids are off as well. My wife is a college professor, and she is off when we are too, so we get to take vacations without burning vacation time.
I just left a horrible job though. It was the shortest job I have had as an adult. I made it for 4 months. Too many late nights and a boss who was an idiot.
I enjoy what I do but I can't say I always enjoy where I work. However, it's IT so you have to expect your job to suck in some capacity.

If you don't mind not making a ton of money, go work for the local school system. Or better yet, if their is a university close by, head there. I spent close to 6 years at a university doing IT support. One of the best jobs ever. Working in the public school system is pretty close. It will be great when christmas rolls around and I am off for 2 weeks. IT doesn't have to suck, I have been in those horrible IT jobs and I got out fast.
The job is ok. People around me not so much. I have a stake in the company, so that helps.

I love my job. I mostly work alone. I have near complete freedom with my hours and vacation days etc. It is a perfect match for my schooling and work experience.
I happen to have an R&D position that doesn't report through the R&D bureaucracy so I'm much less likely to get laid off when budgets are cut. I report through manufacturing as service to that group. Also I'm the only person in our company of about 20,00 worldwide that does what I do.
Though I love my job, I would retire tomorrow if I could afford to.
Yeah, it amazes me how fucking inconsiderate people can be. When my wife was in the hospital a couple of months back, and I mean in the ICU and not looking good at all, I got and email call from some jackass at work who runs one of the committees that I am forced to serve as chairman. He was concerned that I had to cancel the meeting, and then had to cancel the rescheduled meeting, and was inquiring if I took my job responsibilities at all seriously. I emailed back that if didn't like the way I was handling my job, perhaps I could take my 9 million dollars in NIH funding and indirect dollars that pays about a third of the operating costs of the entire institution and take it up to Harvard. I added that it seemed a little unreal that I was in the ICU with my wife, essentially wathcing doctors trying to decide what the hell was wrong with her, and I missed a couple of meetings, and this was a problem. I reminded the guy who emailed me of the time he missed a meeting as he had tickets to a baseball game. I attached a job offer from Harvard, and cc'd the response to the Dean of Faculty, the President of the Institution, and the CFO. I don't usually escalate things, but when I do, I go all the way. I should have just quit on the spot and blamed it on that guy. FTITMFF.
Depends on the day. Somedays are super, somedays are dirt.
It was cool when I did what Kerouac and Mark do. But when I relocated to LA, I did not like how the stores ran their policies for instructors and folded the idea. I will take on 1 or 2 students from time to time but don't do it professionally anymore - maybe one day.

First off - mojo to Mrs P and prayers that she does not kill anyone at work today.....
My job. Interesting question. I think I'm actually pretty secure here for the first time in awhile. Though who knows with more budget cuts coming....January may tell a different tale.
I work in IT (computer programmer - telecom - A/V) at a non-profit. To start with all those job survey/strength survey things all tell me the same thing - I should not be in IT at all. And it shows at times though I do enjoy the work somewhat. The non-profit piece is actually the better part for me and what keeps me in the field. I have less hours and way less stress than most IT people, though is does come at a cost - I could probably get about 15 - 20K more at another company. Overall I do enjoy the job though I am a bit of a fish out of water in the field. I've been in too many career fields already (prep cook/asst. chef, satellite communications tech, golf course greens crew, fast food management, landscaping/sprinkler repair, DJ/radio talk show producer-engineer/radio production assistant, billing clerk/auditor in the trucking industry, etc) and this one helps pay the bills better than most. Once the kids are all out of high school I'll look to change jobs if the budget can handle it.
At this point I work to pay the bills and afford me other stuff I really enjoy. Not everyone can make a living doing what they love. I'm just happy to be employed and have a house right now.
Yet another friend of Jack...
