yeah! Weber 5E7M - Saint style!!!

Somewhat redundant as Prages already had his 5E7M build thread and shared, but I just got the great news from Fed Ex tracking. My Weber 5E7M will be here next Tuesday. So far no backordered items.

Make sure when you get it, you print off the bill of materials from Weber's site and check everything off. I was missing one cap in my kit, but Weber sent me one after I let them know about it.

Most definitely. I was reading your thread on the Weber forum yesterday and recall that being an issue with your build as well as someone elses. I also remember the chassis as being an issue too.

Yeah, but the incorrect chassis is pretty easy to spot without going down the checklist. A missing cap, not so much.

Dying here - not from the heat today. It was 109 yesterday where I live and today it is 87. Got 15 minutes left for the day and the f***in' FedEx truck hasn't come yet - crap....

I am building the 5E7M Head. Combo's are just too heavy as I get towards the 5-0 age.

Well the package came 30 minutes after I left work yesterday -

Our shipping clerk sent me an email confirming this.

So I put my tail between my legs and said it will be there for me tomorrow.

Well tomorrow came and after settling down in my cube for 30 minutes, I went downstairs and brought up my two boxes. Yessssssss.........

Here is the first pic of a wrapped cabinet out of the shipping container - Sweet!

The whole kit was $467 for the cabinet and kit with shipping. The T-Shirt was free during this order period. Please also note that Weber is running a 10% off sale right now.

    Yep - One happy Saint!

I just did inventory and found so far only the #8 Sheet Metal Screws for mounting the Fiber Board missing. I did find it odd though that my 10M ohm resistor appears to be small. Need to compare to a 1/4 Watt or 1/2 Watt in my parts bin.

The cabinet is included in the price listed on the Weber site. If you choose no cabinet, the kit costs $75 less. Modern Saint was smarter than me and waited until Weber was having a 10% off sale, so his price with the cab and T-shirt was only $57 more than what I paid.

That seems to be a pretty popular build on the Weber forum. I didn't go with it because the difficulty scale was up there due to the vibrato and reverb circuits.

My 10M resistor was small too. It's on the far right...second label up from the bottom.

They seem to have 10% sales pretty often. I'd bet that around the middle of November, they'll run a Christmas sale.

Or you could just bite the bullet and order today.

I e-mailed them about the natalie. no commitment yet, depends on what they say about pulling 2 power tubes.

    Don't we all.

    I'd love to do a Marshall clone next. Either a JTM45 or a 1987.

FWIW, just looking at the layout, it looks like to me you should be able to pull two tubes. It looks like it's got the two tubes on each side running in series, with the two series of tubes in parallel. I think that means you could pull either the inner or outer pair, change your impedance setting, and be good to go.

    I think.

If that's the case, I think I can pull off a half power switch.

I would just say lucky more. They extended the an additional month after I ordered mine and I did mine on the last day. The T-shirt was the bonus.

I went through this for the past year as well. Like yourself I too was interested in the 6A20H because stupid me didn't buy a used blackface when they were affordable some 18 years ago. Played the waiting game and well....

My choice to do 5E7M like Prages was my desire 1) to own the Tweed type amp, 2) Bassman or Bandmaster type circuitry, 3) TMB controls. Although I have thrown around the idea of a presence control, it is not important as my JC, Marshall, MB have that control. So let me go for something more pure.

That is what's cool about what you did regarding your component layout. What are the 1 ohm resistors for in the lower right corner?

I put those from pin 8 of each power tube to ground. Then you can clip your multimeter to them and read the voltage drop across the resistor to set bias. I knew when I started that I was going to mod the amp for adjustable bias, so I went ahead and put those resistors in when I built it. They didn't come with the kit.

They are 1ohm 2 watt 1% tolerance. Actually, telecaster911 sent them to me after hand picking and matching their resistance.

What's it comparable to, a Tremolux? I miss my old Tremolux head, and wouldn't mind having another one. Otherwise, I want a gain monster! - something that will go into VHT/Fryette Pitbull territory.

BTW, Modern Saint, have fun with the build!

Makes sense. I just started to install the components on the eyelet board last night and remembered that I too will be adding the adjustable bias as well. I will need to buy these components in the next couple of days.

Last week I layed out the components on the eyelet board and attached the hardware to the chassis of the amp. I really haven't done much until today in which I soldered the components onto the eyelet board.

Here are some pics on my progress

Components are all layed out in prep for soldering

Components Soldered Except Diode on left hand side. I will be ordering a few extra parts for the adjustable bias which will be attached here.

Back of Eyelet board. Will attach wires later on.

Chassis hardware attached for layout testing. I havent removed the film because I am planning to drill a hole on the top part of the chassis to mount the bias pot.

Chassis hardware attached on the front panel. Changed the lamp assembly as I am using a different jewel color for my build. The jewel attached is purple instead of red which comes with the kit. I may go to a white jewel - decisions, decisions,.....

    Rear of chassis.

Chassis fitted into cabinet verifying alignment. I did find a phopa in the cabinet. On the rear panel of the enclosure, they never left an opening for the power cord. Speaker connection - okay. Power connection - WTF Anyway I will just keep the back cover off as it will allow better air circulation for the tubes. If I decide to attach, I will modify the cover as necessary or I may just put a grill.

    5E7M Update.

Installed transformers to determine footprint of items. Ordered some parts for biasing the output tubes. I will be mounting the bias pot through a drilled hole in the chassis. Will start to solder wires to pots and sockets this week.
