It's something you learn after your second theme party: it's all been done before.
Blackmore has been using that technique since the late '60s. Not terribly clean stuff, sure, but it's sweep picking nonetheless. And I do believe he was the first to use it in a hard rock context.
Ritchie Blackmore can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. Well, apart from some of his toupee choices in the 80's.![]()

Barney Kessel was sweep picking in the 40's and 50's, but admittedly in a messy way compared to today's standards.
