Getting Back into Music and thinking of digital.

I know zero about the digital stuff other than it doesn't weigh a ton.

Another option is a pre amp pedal. For someone who lives in classic rock but, but still occasionally wants to play metal AND have it sound good, doesn't want to invest in another amp that will mostly just sit there and is afraid of computers, it's a great option. Downside is you still need your amp, you plug it into the FX return, and if you want to play somewhere else, you have to move your amp.

This is the one I have. They go for about $200 used.

Somebody else here, I don't remember who has a different brand pre amp pedal and is very happy with his.

For casual playing and most live situations digital is so close now and logistically so much easier...
I still have my now obsolete Headrush pedalboard and have no plans to change out of it...

I have given myself an amazing headache sorting all this out :)

As an aside, John Nathan Cordy is giving me whiplash with "Amps are dead, modeling rules" and "No, Amps Rule" "wait, look Helix" :)

That said, September is my 60th birthday. Assuming I am continung with my studies, I think I am going to use whatever Amazon points I've accrued and get the Helix Stomp.

There are a couple of things that drove this. I am having fun with NAM, but need the effects. Playing around in Amplitube I just couldn't get a good sound. I was getting some hiss I really didn't want to sort out. I prefer practicing with headphones as my wife does not appreciate metal at all.

But the actual final kicker was getting into a great neo-80s metal band Crazy Lixx. First time I heard them I was all "Oh yah, there we go. That classic plexi sound modelling can't beat." And, of course it turns out they are all-in on fractal. At the same time, I remembered that classic 80s wet tone had so many effects layered on top of it modelling actually suits it well.
