I fucking love Marvin Gaye, but Motown's MO was to keep things straight ahead and palatable to white audiences. They moved more into the black pride stuff later, but I don't think any of that was nearly as popular as the earlier stuff. Stax was definitely a lot funkier, and I understand that was at least partially by design to set themselves apart from Motown.
