Well, about a week ago I read that Pine Apple Slim had swapped out a 12ax7 in favor of a 12au7 tube, and he loved the sound. It got me to thinking about one of my amps - a Tube Works head - that is solid state, but also has a drive channel that uses a 12ax7 tube in the preamp. I'm more of an overdriven sound guy, rather than a hard distortion sound, so I had been thinking about switching out the tube, but I just wasn't sure which type would sound the best, until PAS said how much he loved the warmth, and crunchiness of the 12au7 tube. I ordered a JJ 12au7, and today I installed it (had to remove a couple of hot glue globs to remove the old tube). What a difference it made, and although I have liked this amp since I got it (about 10 years ago), I have gone from like to love for this amp! I played my PRS SE Custom 24 through it for about 20 minutes, and wow! I have to go out tonight, but I can't wait to get back and try a Strat through it.
