This is the wrong capacitor, right?

I bought this .47uf, 400v capacitor in the guitar section of eBay. I assume that I bought the wrong thing. This huge cap isn’t right for a guitar, is it?

Yep, that is wrong cap.

It will work, if there's room for it. It's way overkill for the voltage present in your guitar.

Edit: were you looking for a .047uf cap? That is the wrong value that you have there.

The output voltage of most pickups varies between 100 mV and 1 V.
So yeah you could run 400 guitars through that cap.

You want a .047 mfd cap. Not a .47 mfd. It should be labeled 473J not 474J. J indicates 5% tolerance. So 473K is okay too. That's 10% tolerance.

You could do "Overkill" by Men at Work justice with that, that's for sure.
It would work even better if you drill holes in the pickguard and mount it OUTSIDE the cavity.

I picked up a handful of ceramic caps at a local electronics shop today. Sadly he had run out of orange drops and most of his small caps are on clearance. But I did find out that he stocks pretty much every vacuum tube ever, including NOS, used, and new.
