Started a new "job" today

Honestly forgot what it was like to get along with everyone at work and not constantly be walking on eggshells. My bro in laws garage needs a driver/gopher/shop cleaner temporarily so I took it.

I wish I could actually pay my bills doing this. Seriously....getting work done and making fart jokes all day is exactly what I needed. Always knew I shoulda just been a mechanic.

glad ya got something going, especially where the stress level is very low......hey.....you do know.....you can take mechanic classes and get ASC certified.

I'm in a rewarding but stressful job, and I can relate to the feeling. After a week teaching special education, it's an absolute joy to put a couple hours in at a friend's workshop sweeping, running parts through a jig, etc. Enjoy it while you can, and use the head-clearing powers of grunt work to form a vision for your future.

I worked for a few years building guitars full time. I was going to school and working part time at night. Building didn't pay much, but it was the most satisfying, relaxing job I ever had. If I could do that full time and make a decent living, I would do it in a heartbeat.

You might lose a job, but you didn't lose who you are.

The day I get cut loose from my job, I am going "pornographer" on LinkedIn. Bet you my contacts jump 300% that day.

Oooh, can I work as your personal fluffer?

I still remember my drug screen at my last job as a mechanic. Whatever it was, that was some good shit.

I was layed off a bunch of years ago so I took a job in a 2 man shop that made custom fireplace mantels and doors. It didn't pay much but there was no stress and the creativity was a wonderful outlet. I learned some great carpenter and wood carving skills using cherry, mahogany, and koa.
I've posted this before, but it is cool enough to do again...

I'm a mechanic. I've always been one. From my earliest memories I'd take stuff apart to see how it worked and reassemble it again. That hasn't changed a bit. Doing what you like to do is priceless if you can make a living at it. It's been a good ride for me.

Yeah. I just cant take the time out from a "real" job to get enough of a skillset to become one. I can do a lot, but not at the level of a pro tech. I tried WAY back. Was supposed to "apprentice". Instead I was a lot boy and after 6 months of BS from the boss with no firm timetable, I had to move on and make money. Maybe I should have stuck it out, but the place was pretty shady and I doubt I would have ever actually gotten to apprentice.

I did learn a lot, but was never officially allowed to help the techs there. If nothing was going on I could hang out with them and watch and hand em tools and even get my hands into some stuff, but never through a full job. I've learned even more taking care of my own vehicles and trying to save money by using a Hanes.

I just applied for a service advisor position and got denied. I'll keep looking around for those. I could be very good at it now that the hair is gone. I treat customers extremely well, can explain vehicle systems in layman's terms and I'm extremely comfortable in a garage. Not too many open around here from what I can find but that'd be perfect for me. I don't ask much.

Good on you for being proactive...

I spent a year and a half driving a taxi while I hunted for a real job, then spent 2 years delivering auto parts, one of them as a part-timer...I went 3 years without health benefits...but at least I had pride and a sense of self-worth...now I have a decent job running the parts room in a Mitsubishi dealership...

Keep plugging away at it...if people see you fighting for it one of them will reward you for it...
