I played one of these yesterday and it was pretty cool. My kinda Bass VI. I could totally see rocking the Thud Staff and then switching to this for other toanz.
 
These are short-scale six string basses, not new bass VI designs. The hardware, electronics, and body/neck are all typical of a bass, not a guitar.

The Bass VI is a tunes E to E and is a 30" scale. You could make a case that both grew out of the Dano Guitarlin, but the Bass VI dropped the range of the instrument. It's more bass than guitar, just like this one, and we can consider the differences between them another case of vintage vs modern.
