View Full Version : Okay Pedal People... I'm trying to decide between a couple Tap Tempo equipped Delays.

I have a Visual Sounds H20 Chorus/Delay that I like well enough... I don't use it that much... but I really think a delay pedal that has tap tempo capability would be far more useful to me... I could change delay repeats at the tap of a foot, not having to bend down and fiddle with knobs while I'm playing.
Here are the possibilities I've come up with so far:
TC Nova Delay $249
http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/products/tn/3/6/4/531364.jpg
TC Repeater $169 (almost everything I'd use off the above pedal without the display, this one's mono the Nova is stereo.)
http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/products/tn/8/0/6/601806.jpg
Akai Headrush $199 (Also has looping capabilities. I love my Boomerang but this could allow me multiple loop options as well)
http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/products/tn/6/3/6/239636.jpg
Satriani Time Machine $199
http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/products/tn/4/1/6/596416.jpg
I know there are others... but I'd like to stay around $200 if possible, and I don't need another fancy multi-effects unit. I like simple, easy to use, and METAL CASE IS A MUST. Don't recommend anything with a plastic case (I stomp on pedals like godzilla stomps on buildings) :p
Short of me A/Bing every single one of these, do you have any thoughts / recommendations / worries?

i don't know what the differences are between the TC pedals, but my Nova Dynamics is pretty solid. the only problem is that it uses a 12v power supply and doesn't take batteries. so if you daisy chain your effects and don't want another wall wart on the power strip, they're not for you.
the Eventide TimeFactor is supposed to be the most amazing delay pedal ever, and it has a looper. it can be daisy chained, but you need a reverse polarity end. its also $400.

I love the Nova delay. It does everything I could ever want and A LOT more.
The cons are that it needs its own outlet. I just plug it into the 3-pring outlet on my PP2+, so it's not a big deal.
Also it can be a PITA to make changes on the fly. It's more for making presets and switching among them between songs.
If I had to do it over again, I might go with the TC Repeater. But that wasn't out yet when I got mine.

Before I got my Carbon copy I was really looking at the Satriani Time Machine. If I had the cash I'd get the Eventide, though.

I'm not too concerned with the power supply... my Boomerang needs it own, and then I have a 1 spot that powers my tuner, wah, and anything else.
I'm NOT spending $400 on a doodle-box. I'd spend $400 on an amp... but not an effect.

you have a Boomerang. you don't need a do-all delay/looper.

I got my Nova for $180 used on CL.

I only use it for looping though.... I'm looking for something to do ambient echos that I can change the delay rate depending on the song.

you missed my point.
there is no reason for you to spend $400 on a Timefactor, because you already have a looper. therefore, you're better off spending less on a pedal that does exactly what you want.
i think the Nova Delay is what you're looking for. especially if you go used.

Ahh... I see. I didn't even want to spend $400 on my looper... I got it for $225 I think.

right. because it does one thing really well. if you didn't have a looper or a delay pedal, then the Timefactor would be worth it.

Okay... just found a Rob Chappers review (http://www.sonicstate.com/news/2009/11/20/amped-tc-electronic-repeater-its-echonomical/) of the Nova Repeater.
The fact that it has a "LISTEN" feature where you can hold down the tap tempo, play, and it DETECTS the rhythm of your playing and adjusts.
BAM... that is the kind of straight forward, easy to use feature that gets the A+ Baimun Engineering award. :baimun:

Okay... I found something I like even better, but I'm not going to mention it for fear of  until I have a chance to play through it myself. :p

Can't.
It completely goes against my "TUBES ARE GOD" philosophy. :o

Axe-FX, right?
Not quite.... about 1/2 the price.... ProTools Eleven Rack.
I wouldn't use it instead of my Orange... just an alternative. I could record direct with it, do a quick and dirty plug into my PA, run it into my Orange, Use it only as an effects device in the Orange Loop, or use the Orange by itself.
http://www.sweetwater.com/feature/eleven_rack/images/11_callouts.jpg
I was looking at ProTools LE and an Mbox anyways, so this gives a bunch more flexability for not a lot more money. I'm going to have to make the trek to Sweetwater and check it out in person first.
One crazy thing it does... you can listen to the full rig, while it simultaneously records that AND a completely dry sound with embedded coding for the patch in ProTools. Then you can go back and change the amp, effects, or whatever without rerecording. If you flip to different parts of the song, it can automatically recall which settings you were using for that section, even if you don't have that patch stored.

have you ever tried to use one of those? there's a reason delay pedals are so popular.
also, no tap tempo. :o

^^^ That has even more knobs than my Nova. And I thought that one was complicated.

Yeah, one of my friends has one that has been meticulously restored and even has some NOS tape. I *love* that thing, more than any of his other gear.

i can get 90% of the way there with my Jacques Prisoner Delay. the Space Echo just isn't worth the hassle.
