i thought this forum could use some BT jam action! just something to record/have a lil fun in between the recordingfests etc.
i know, "Not Another Aebersold!"
but this one popped up on shuffle  and i actually liked it. its got a nice groove.
its just Bbminor the whole way through. the track is really long, so cut it down if ya feel like it! i know i wont be soloin for 6 minutes!
http://www.mediafire.com/?wjjmnegjkzz
im postin this tonight just to get started, but i wont get around to recording it until tomorrow morning.
"Put Or Shut Up" :p
...I took a stab at it...its sloppy, and I just wend direct in, I didnt feel like setting up the mic and all that...I love playing along to Abersol though...back when I was gigging regularly, I would just riff along, made it easier soloin during a gig...

Very cool! I'll definitely give this a whack in the next day or so. Mosidiqi and I were just discussing doing a weekly BT jam.....I'm going to let this stay her until tomorrow to let everyone see it and then I'll move it to the backing track forum once it gets some traction....:thu:

I usually spend a lot of time working out what I want to play and then spend even more time figuring out how to execute it ...
"Put Or Shut Up" :p
but since you put it that way ;)
Here you go - my second listen to the song, first take on the guitar.

...yea, Grant Green is all over my playing...Ive studied him very closely...they never liked that at college, my professor would always say "you really love that pentatonic box, dont you?"...he's from the Wynton Marsalis school of thought...a great guy, but its all bop with him, playing the changes real tight...I like just sitting back and jamming...

:D....As I'm primarily a rock/metal type player...targetting the 6ths and 9ths does sound jazzier to me..:idk:..particularly that move where you slide into the 9 from the b9......but that's probably because I'm so used to hearing/playing licks that resolve on the root/3rd..

i hear ya, but i also understand where your teachers were coming from. Grant Green is only scratching the surface of whats possible with the jazz language. hes also alot easier and bluesy than most.. i think thats why alot of beginner jazzers are attracted to him. (myself included, the first jazz solo i learned was a Green one, "Solid")
i think hes a great foundation to have, as you can always go back to those great simple lines that just sound good.. but i needed something more. Grant Green wont get you through a song with Coltrane changes. or tunes like Inner Urge, etc.... now, of course that might be the opposite of the kind of music you play, but in a university setting, theyve gotta challenge to learn more than just what you want.
itd be hard for me to go to school and want to be a doctor but not want to put in the full amount of work to learn all that i can. (not a good analogy, but you get my point)
and Grant Green to Coltrane.. thats quite a big leap.. surely there are musicians inbetween you could learn from.
Dexter Gordon for one! hes like a Coltrane thats easier to digest.

...I love Dexter Gordon, as well as others, but Grant Green and Coltrane make the most sense to me, they both did what they wanted, regardless of what others thought...the thing with college was, I foolishly assumed that I would be able to develop as a musician, instead, they wanted me to copy note for note what someone else already came up with...If I wanted to play something note for note, I would have studied classical music...
...and with the Trane changes, I doubt he sat down and thought, "hmm, I think i'll pick these modes and scales to use because they fit over what im doing here"...he was just doing his thing...and that was good enough for him...its the people that analyze everything so much that take the fun out of it...
...I know whats possible with the jazz language, but I dont want to memorize other people speeches, I want to make my own...Im not about to rewrite great expectations and call it my own...you want great expectations?, than heres the original...if your interested in what I have to say, then have a seat while I tune up here...

But I don't think you are giving Coltrane nearly enough credit here. I understand you don't like to analyze things, but if you were to analyze, say, Giant Steps, Coltrane's connection of modes and scales to a specific chord progression seems quite conscious and intentional.

That line at 3:12 truly is some badass playing :thu:. I like the way you stay relaxed and slightly behind the beat. The reverb/room sound on the guitar doesn't really match up well with the very dry sounding backing track.

...I agree...especially taking Countdown from Tune up...but once he wrote these tunes, I dont think he was going around bragging about it...no one sat him down and told him he had to do that, he did it by his own accord because he wanted to...I understand how it works, I just choose to play what I want, and not what I feel I have to...if you want to a run up and down scales, then thats your thing, but dont start telling me what I can and cannot do...as you can see, I have a lot of aggression towards college...

like i said, i hear ya. but i think you are selling Coltrane short.
he practiced everyday, nonstop. he learned tons of solos from his favorite sax players. (charlie parker, sonny rollins, dexter...) You arent ever just gonna come up with some language out of thin air. Everything you play is a reflection of what youve played/heard before. Coltrane studied his ass of with scales, and the Slominsky Thesaurus etc...
how are you ever going to "breakthrough" if you just stay with whats comfortable?
if you got to college and you just wanted to play in that Grant Green style, then whats the point of going to college? if you just wanted to do what you wanted to do, you couldve saved yourself some money! :p
.

...I didnt just want to play "grant green style"...I think your selling me short...I wanted to improve...but all I got was a stack of Cd's and the instructions "memorize these solo's"...I could have done that at home, without having to pay thousands of dollars...I think Jazz education in College is horrible...its much too hands off, and depends way to much on a set standard...theres no individual...everyone plays the same thing...it totally defeats the point of jazz...I have nothing against learning what made other people tick, but I dont want to sound like that, I want to do what ever I happen to do, but they say you cant do that until you proved you can i.e. wasted a few y ears and a lot of money going to graduate school...
...What I love about jazz is that is personal...Monk once said "Jazz is freedom" and for me, it was, until I went to college, then it became stale and traditional...gone was the freedom to create, replaced by a catechism that is collegiate jazz education...
...I dont know, I guess im just not willing to accept that what I thought was freedom was nothing more than another organized structure...
requiem156

I think pretty much all music has an organized structure component, and a creative component. If there was no organized structure, how would they teach it in college? There has to be a standardized curriculum, and a group of standards that apply across the board - otherwise all your achievements would be subjective. idn_smilie
