the BOSS version of the Tubescreamer is the SD-1. the BD-2 is more the "flat mids" version. i'm not sure if its the same chip, but its intended as a low gain boost, not really as a distortion pedal; just as the tubescreamer originally was.
also like the tubescreamer, its highly moddable. just check out some of the mods Keeley has for it.
if i were buying a TS based pedal today, i'd get an HBE Power Screamer. i had one, and its a really great pedal. does the TS thing, a RAT like thing, and even a fuzz. and its got a boost.

My vote in this tonal neighborhood is the Barber LTD...
I've had 3 TS-9's (vintage, reissue and an Analogman) and a stock BD2. My buddy Scott has a Keeley BD2 that I like the best of the bunch....

Keeley DS-1 = $100
Keeley BD-2 = $125
BD-2 Stock - $45.00
LTD - $150.00
Can you guess which 1 I choose.

Actually the LTD is $119.00
The BD-2's not a bad pedal...just be careful of the treble...
