Lately, my amp (classic 30) has been crackling when I turn it on. It doesnt matter if anything is plugged in or not and the volume is down all the way. It is fairly loud too. It was doing it yesterday so I turned it off. It made a loud thunk. Then I turned it on and it was fine.
Any idea why that would happen?

Might be a tube or filter cap :idk:

At one point my C30 would start to get some crackling after it heated up. I preplaced the preamp tubes to no avail. Then I replaced the power tubes.
Problem solved. What sucked is that the power tubes that were in it at the time were only about a month old.

When I bought it, the guy sent a couple of extra tubes. I can try to change some out and see what happens. It does it right when I turn it on though. It seems to be better once it has been on for a while.

Hmmm....
I noticed that my DRRI does a crackling thing when I turn it on and off. And last night it was doing it longer than normal. Mine is a 1999 model and I believe it has the original tubes in it (I don't think the previous owners play it much - it looks brand new). I'm guessing it's time to retube. Time to hit up Lord Valve (NBS Electronics) for some new tubes. It's past replacement time anyway...
