View Full Version : Acoustic for my Daughter

My daughter tells me the other day that she wants to learn to play the guitar!! I bought her a cheap short scale electric a few years ago but she never really wanted to actually learn. She picks it up once in a while but mostly she goofs around and makes music videos with her friends. Now she tells me she wants an acoustic to actually play.

I am looking for suggestions for something I can get for her on a really, really tight budget. I have an acoustic that I have no problem letting her use but it is a fairly large guitar. I dont think I am looking for a short scale guitar but would like something more like the OM sized guitars. Mine is a southern jumbo (dreadnaught with rounded off shoulders) and thought I would try to find something smaller. I actually wouldnt mind having a smaller one in the house anyway.

So what is out there on the cheap? I know I can get a Samick locally for about $200 but if I go that route, it will be a while. Mine is a Samick and it looks, sounds and plays fantastic so I have no issues with the more generic brands. I was hoping to find something a little cheaper that isnt junk and is playable.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

I personally haven't played anything in that price range that I've felt worth the money. I do however have a $300 seagull s6 grand. It's a parlor size with a solid cedar top and lam cherry sides and back. It is however short scale. It sounds great, I mean really great. Like it's worth much more than it really is.

Thanks for the replies. I hope to get a little time to stop by one of the music shops around here. I'd love to get something used but I hate craigslist.

I'm not in a huge hurry because I am broke but if I can get my bike sold, I will probably look to pick something up. Keep an eye out.

I; not sure what to recommend as far as what is currently out there...most of my students start on electric guitar....I would think that in your price range it would just be bets to take her to a guitar store and see what fits her physically the best...you know enough about guitars at this point to be aware of things like bad tuners and high frets and whatnot...

Do what I did for my niece. Take her into a music store or pawnshop and start looking for used stuff. I took Peanut to our local GC and told her we MIGHT buy one if we found something nice that felt good in her hands and didn't play like a POS. As it turned out, they had a really nice playing Ibanez that cost me 150 including picks and a strap. When I priced it new from MF, it was almost double that for the guitar alone. She still plays it, takes lessons and her teacher said that I got a hell of a deal. Gotta shop around.

True.

I guess I need to just get out and start poking around. I tried to resist posting a "which guitar should I get" thread but I caved.

Yamaha makes a nice little short scale acoustic. I have a couple of students who have them and they're quite good.

Stay away from the SX Acoustics though... I have one and while it's kinda fun to play, it's pretty shite. The binding was painted on and it has no truss rod, so someday it'll just be completely fucked. Still it was $50 and is nice to take on overnights or something.
