OK, Suhnton. Love Like Villians, not my style but I like it. I love your vocals man, I love your songwriting ability, you're an incredibly talented musician. I cant believe your stuff doesnt get more attention, it's really great. It's catchy, it's quality, and I'd think would have a very wide appeal.

I really love the outro solo, Mark!!

OK. Clouds, from the amazingly talented Suhnton. I actually dont like the vocals as much on this one. I like them, but I like the vocals on the other stuff better, but overall still love the tune. AOK

Right, just heard the first couple.

round and round - ...that's fantastic!..great vocals Prages and killer guitar Mark!...totally :Totally_jammin_out:

Suhnton - lovely sound, I really liked Clouds :thu:

Will check out the rest after dinner..thanks for all your kind words on my slightly unusual effort :o

Edit: round and round has actually reminded me of how much I like Warren Di Martini's lead playing..he definitely stood out from the rest of that 80's crowd.

noquarter- MAJOR :Totally_jammin_out: :thu:..love the change of pace and the vocal.

Hobo Uncle Sam - Lovely. As micwalt said, it's all there. :thu:

CGord & Micwalt - Well, I loved this the first time round..:o. you guys are The Metal Gods as far as I'm concerned (due respect to Rob Halford of course)

Karma - Damn fine work as ever...nice vibe to the whole thing. :thu:

Aahzz - I love that ..I really like that whole "tell a story" type of song and that's a beauty. Nice tone and vocal. :thu:

Auto-FXI: Really nice. Love the intro. This one kind of sounds like a cross between U2 and Collective Soul to me. I think it's the drumming and vocals that really remind me of Collective Soul, though this one is very Bono-esque in the vocal department. I really do enjoy your stuff a lot.

Prages/Mark – I was never the biggest Ratt fan, but damn, I like that a hell of a lot.
I’m really interested to know what you did in the mixing/mastering, it sounds fantastic.

Mosidiqqi – I think this is really well arranged, I like it a lot. I also hear LSD is very cheap in the UK…:)

Noquarter1983 – I like the guitar tones, what is that? Just one thing: I think the drums should come up in the mix a little (then again, I compress the crap out of my drum parts).

Gcord/MicWalt – This kind of reminds me of KingsX, especially the harmonies. Well, kind of like KingsX with that guy from Pearl Jam (Mike McCready) on guitar. Good stuff.

Rsadasiv – Good stuff. Admittedly, I don’t listen to much jazzfunk (although I have a few friends that play this kind of music), but well played. It’s also the first time I’ve heard this style of music played with a resonably heavily-overdriven guitar.

Karma279 – Dig the vox, the kind of style that you’d have to be a resonably big guy physically to pull off. Me being a midget, I could never do it…

Hobo Uncle Sam – I’d really like to hear this with some vocals over it. What did you record with? I really like that production sound.

aahhzz - Good stuff. I think I have mentioned this before but I think you sound like Chris Goss from Masters Of Reality. I have to ask: this Anne-woman-incident occurred before you met your wife right? Or is Anne your wife....

Chihli/Mark – Cheers for collaborating. I know I took several liberties with your recorded stuff editing-wise. I’m sure both of you are thinking: What the hell did you do to my guitar parts?

Skullbonnet is amazing!!! It's the most fresh music with a vocal line I've ever heard from a forumite. Nothing rehashed about it! Rock and Roll v2.0 or something. Great playing and singing.... really cool.

Round and Round f'in' rocks my mother f'n face off......:o

Suhnton: - I love the retro sound of these songs. I'm starting to become a real fan of your musics. I find it amazingly familiar, retro, yet up to date.
The synth's are choice!

noquarter1983 - Good riffs on the first tune, I really like the sound of the second one a lot. There is a real good commercial quality to your voice, and the second tune fits it like a glove.

rsadasiv - AWESOME!!! Man, this ROCKS! I'm not a fan of Jazz, but this had me movin' in my chair. You've always been excellent at putting really interesting arrangements together, and this one smokes. This is my favorite thing you've ever done. I like how it evolves as the track ages. Good work!

Hobo Uncle Sam: If you keep picking it like that, It'll never heal! Good show!

Cgord and Mike - You guys rock. You're the second best King's X I know.....:o
Seriously, I love that tune. It's on my iPod.

Karma279 - Good stuff... Tasty in-between-vox-lead playing there.

Aahzz - Love the lead tone. Totally Allman Bro's. It's got some good lyrical ideas too.

all my guitar parts are a combination of my fender strat, american series, or my heavily modded epiphone SG. They were ran into my pod x3, then to computer.

Vocals were done with a shure sm7 mic into an apogee duet for Paralyzed, and No Other was a combination of a Neumann tlm103 into the apogee.

Saturday Funk is based on the Red Ant backing track, so I thought that kind of worked for the Collaborations theme. I'm playing the scratchy lead guitar and Rhodes, and I also added the percussion track. I'd love to hear versions from mosiddiqi and whoever else has worked over this track.

Back for the rest tomorrow.

Prages/Mark – I was never the biggest Ratt fan, but damn, I like that a hell of a lot.
I’m really interested to know what you did in the mixing/mastering, it sounds fantastic.

Thanks.

I recorded all my parts using a Presonus Firepod into Cubase SX.

For the drums, I mic'd up my acoustic kit using an SM57 on the snare, fake SM57s on the toms, an Audix D6 kick mic, and Audio Technica AT2020s for overheads. Went back and EQed and compressed each drum track, as well as putting a liberal amount of room reverb on the snare and overhead.

Bass was my MIA Jazz bass plugged straight into the Firepod. I added compression and a Tubescreamer plugin in post. The Tubescreamer was set more for compression than OD, though there is a hint of OD on the bass track.

The vocals were all done with a CAD Trion 8000 tube condensor mic. Then I compressed them and added a touch of reverb and delay. The lead vocals are all double tracked as well.

I think Mark used the Waves GTR plugin for his guitar parts. He'll have to get more specific as I don't know the details.

As for the mix, I just tried to EQ everything so it had it's own spot in the mix. Rhythm guitars are panned hard right and hard left, lead guitars are panned about 30% left (for the harmony part on solo 1) and 30% right. After doing a couple of pretty lackluster test mixes, the final mix ended up with the drums a litte on the loud side so they'd drive the song. The vocals are just loud enough to sit on top of the music, as are the lead guitar tracks.

Once the mix was where I wanted it, I used a Waves Ultramaximizer plugin on the master bus, mainly to tame the big peaks. Then I used T-Racks 24 Mastering Suite to do a tiny bit more EQ, compression, and multi-band limiting, bringing the volume of the overall mix way up and making it nice and punchy.

What a great batch of songs! :)

Suhnton:
Great job on all 3. I really liked especially Auto-F and Love Like Villains.
Good stuff :)

CGord/micwalt:
Kickass!
Great riffs, and vocals are as always top notch.
Mike pisses me off sometimes by being so fucking good :o

Hobo Uncle Sam:
Ditto on what Mark said. A bit of work on the bends, and it's all good :)
Nice work.

noquarter:
Good vocals again.
A bit of timing problems in the intro to No Other, but other than that it's all good :aok:
You seem to have found a distinct style, and it works.

Karma279:
I'd lose the fx (chorus/flanger) on the guitars, and add a tiny bit of dirt to it instead (just a suggestion). Sounds a bit too clean and polished together with the vocals imo.
Good song though, I detect an AIC vibe to it, not surprising ;)

Mark/Prages:
Rawk! heavy-metal-044
Honestly I like it better than the original. Never was a big Ratt fan, to be honest :o
Everything's well performed and sounds great.
Really good lead Mark. :)

Mosiddiqi:
Well that is definitely different.
Rawks verily!
Very good vocals by the wife btw.

rsadasiv:
Creative as always, and unpredictable.
I like that :)

Cool story song.
Dig the use of the major 7th.

Both sound great. Nice combination of styles and sounds.

Hobo Uncle Sam Front Porch (http://markwein.com/sf/frontporch.mp3)
+1 on getting the bends in tune. Has the makings for a good song - I like the reverb and the guitar tones.

Nice song. Not sure if it is the chorus effect or an actual tuning issue, but there is something off between the guitars.

Thanks for the props so far guys...
I really wanted to redo the vocals on this one. As you can see if you trace the link; it was a scratch track that I kept.
Yeah; the chorus on the guitar is where I doubled the guitar track and added the effect to only one of them (and I think I may have panned it) That may be why it sounds like it does.
I agree... Perfect Man needs to work like a ballad.... build up to a climax and heavier drums and distortion.

It's a song my best friend wrote, so this is technically a cover.

Now that the weekend is over, I may be able to get the rest of these listened to pretty soon. :o Sorry for the delay. I was a little pre-occupied for the last 4 or 5 days. :aok:

No Other - Nice. The intro reminds me of Velvet Revolver. That's gone when the vocals kick in though. Neat change up in the chorus. I really like this song.

Paralyzed - Another really cool song from you. I love the harmonies. Nice use of tremolo too.

Front Porch - Nice little groove there. Seems like a solid enough foundation for a song.

Set You Free - Holy Crap. I remember hearing this one before and thinking it rocked. My opinion is unchanged. That is really, really good.

Perfect Man - The doubled vocals are pretty cool. I like how you have them panned. Very good song all the way around. I'd like to hear some guitar fills in there somewhere, maybe between vocal phrases. Great job.

Song for a Girl Named Anne Who I Met In a Bar One Name - nice story telling song here. The acoustic guitar sounds really nice. I was just thinking it needed some drums or other percussion and then they bongos kicked in. Nice. I really like this one.
