Cool little lesson - I have been doing the single string pentatonics for awhile now just because I like the simplicity and smoothness of them , but not too much on the 2 strings. At this point I need to just get to the point where I don't get lost in the middle strings, making sure I hit the pentatonic shape notes.

What I really need help on is playing intervals within those pentatonics over chord progressions rather than single notes all the time. I seem to always just play I-V I-IV and I-III sticking with the root because it fits those progressions and the notes fit the major chords , but I know there is so much more to do with harmonies and intervals. I love playing double stops to mix it up a bit, but that's the extent. Just not sure how to start to playing harmony intervals(Not sure if I am explaining it well).

Are you talking about skipping wide intervals in single note lines?

No. I guess I am not using the correct terminology. More like 2 note chords(Diads) and 2 note arppegios of those same diads - other than power chords(I-V), like fourths, but in a harmony to the bass progression.

Is there a common harmony interval that is used a lot - like a fourth up from the key of the song.

i'm really trying to break out my standard sound.

If you are dealing with JUST the pentatonic scales then you are playing 4ths and quite a bit...I think thats where Eric Johnson gets quite a bit of his sound...

What about for Major Pentatonics - What is a common harmony interval for a Major key. I seem to relate everything to the Major Pentatoincs(And just compensate for the relative minor-6th). For some reason when I learned the Pentatonics, I learned them as major first (CAGED System - Bill Edwards - Fretboard logic) with minor pent being secondary(Since I can relate it to the Major). Its weird, since it seems like every other method teaches the minor versions first, but Bill Edwards is the teacher who deveopled the CAGED system, correct.

Can you give me an example of a 2 string pentatonic harmony interval I could use over something such as Major D A G progression to help me understand the possibilities.

Thanks,
Michael

I think that minor pentatonics are usually taught first because they are more used by rock and blues players, so they are starting with something they not only might have a little experience with but will be able to apply them quicker.

Having said that, it makes more sense to me for a musician to learn their major scale first and then derive the other scales from that. Then you are learning interval relationships and theory that will help you learn harmony quicker as well.

If I was going to play 2 note chords (diads, I guess) over a chord progression that I would be playing a D Major Pentatonic scale over i would actually pull the notes from the D Major scale itself...without the 7th and 4th the minor pentatonic doesn't allow for 3rs or 4ths consistently up the scale (if you are trying to harmonize the whole scale).

Does this help?
