I can't believe that any musician wouldn't be thrilled with the availability of great recording gear at cheap prices. It just boggles my mind.

I didnt read the whole thread but I cant figure why anyone (except the record companies) would be UNHAPPY about the ability of modern musicians to record at home.

The main argument is that because nearly everyone can afford a home recording setup, but not necessarily be good at making music, that means that while there is a lot of music available, a lot of it is crap. Apparently some people think that record companies need to be in place to weed out the crap.
There's also the argument that home studios have become so powerful that people use studio trickery instead of actually learning to play.

Most music in general is crap. What is the home studio boom adding to that? I like most home artists better than the bigger bands anyway, I cant think of anyone except Skillet that has come out in the hast, say, 5 years, that I even like.
All record companies do is force crap down the sheeple's throats.

Okay then have them explain where the weeders were when these things happened - Just some minor examples:
Menudo
Tiffany
New Kids on the Block
The latest Bon Jovi debaucles
98 Degrees
Brittany Spears...

As opposed to having studio musicians "ghost play" on the album so it sounds like a talentless hack can pull it off. They were able to scam people before there was Protools just as well as they are now.... :o

Crap is crap.
Crap recorded well is still crap.
I don't think home recording technology has impacted the music industry at all. MP3 technology, however, has destroyed the industry. And while it's really cool for us guys who are sharing our stuff on the intarwebz, it is kind of a shame that it's that much more difficult to be a successful recording artist now because of it.

People love to spew their version of reality all over the place while believing that everything and everyone who is not in agreement with this nugget of self perceived brilliance is just stupid. It is probably more prominent on the internet but I know people like that in real life too.
And some people are just bitter.

I think it's Myspace and such that is the cause of some of the problems mentioned, not actual recording gear. If there was Myspace/Soundclick/etc. and only shitty ole tape recorders, that music would still be out there.

There's studio trickery in damn near everthing ever recorded. However, tamoore's and micwalt's stuff (and hopefully mine), just use studio trickery to augment an already underlying talent.
I've got no problem with using studio trickery to layer parts or correct a bum note here or there, or to make slick production (which I'm pretty sure is what all of us here do).

What constitutes studio "trickery," though, and what is just good arranging/production?

Depends on who you ask, I guess. I'm as guilty as anybody of producing the crap out of my stuff to make it sound better than it really is. :o
I mean, for me to pull off any of my songs live like they are on the recording, I'd need about a 10 piece band.

Its "trickery" if you despise the artist and "production" if you love them :o
