Like myself. And since im not a pro or anything, would something like this be useful? At least at my level?

Well, its a compressor mostly i think. But it has lots of stuff that i'd have to mess with to figure out. I'd like to get a standalone compressor and reverb (or multiFX with reverb) to play with during recording. I know behringer isnt top shelf stuff, but maybe for my purposes and my level of ignorance it would be good enough.

I don't think you want a hardware compressor, but I don't know anything about that recorder you have. Your recorder probably should have compression built in. Does it have reverb or any effects built in?

Nah, i wish it did. I have a Tascam DP-01, its and 8 track digital with a hard drive, i do all my recording on it, master it, output a WAV to my computer with a USB.

So all the stuff is done on the standalone, and doesnt have built in effects. Next model up, the DP-01FX does.

Thing is, with a standalone reverb and compressor, i can run my drum machine or ovation through it as i record, so i can have different effects on each track.

If you're doing digital recording, then I'm not sure if it's really necessary. There are a lot of free software-based compressors readily available on The Netz. I seem to recall you saying you record in your lounge, then shuffle off to your bedroom to transfer your recorded stuff.

EDIT: Sorry, you posted your response (above) before mine. Have you thought about going computer-based? It may work out cheaper for you in the long term.

Yeah, well thats the thing. So far all i transfer is the final mixed down WAV file, software never comes into play.

Can you use your recorder as an interface and record straight to your computer?

If it's the one below, it seems like you could record your tracks, then dump them individually into a DAW. Connect it to the pc via the USB cable, and then (I guess) import the files. Is there any software or drivers that came with the recorder?

Yep, thats the one i have. Just the DP-01, without the built in effects.

Yeah, i guess i could just enter the tracks one by one into my computer and mess with it.

Can't you record everything onto the Tascam, then dump them all at once onto your pc? That's the impression I got from the video.

Yeah, you can. That part isnt quite as simple though.

You have to export each track individually on the Tascam to a partition on the drive, which is a bit of a pain. Right now its simpler for me just to master it where it sits and export the finished product as a WAV to the partition, then haul the recorder to my bedroom and upload it as the finished product.

I suppose i am resisting the inevitable, its just that as my set up sits now, its just more conducive to do all my work in the "music room" i have set up. I was just going to try to set up a standalone effects loop for the recorder.

I guess your original plan of using a hardware compressor is the simplest option then. Is it still available?

If you wanted a bit more flexibilty, what you could probably do is, record your insrument straight in (i.e no compressor). Then put the compressor on the FX buss and route that track to it, then bounce it to another track after you've set a nice compression ratio. Dunno how well it would work, I'm just trying to throw some ideas out there which hopefully may help you.
