Q: i have a Peavey Classic 30. sounds great but i need a boost for leads. my boost out front just provides more distortion. what should i do?

me: put the boost in the fx loop. problem solved.

a: get a distortion pedal!
a: get higher gain pickups!
a: use your volume knob
a: get a GFS modboard

prages: put the boost in the loop. problem solved.

dude, why the fuck do we keep going over there?

The thing is, there are a bunch of guys over there that really do know their stuff.

There are just far too many that don't and they are very eager to give advice.

I also love how some people think you can turn your channel volume way down and dime your master volume and get powertube overdrive.

The power section needs signal going into it before it overdrives.

I don't know if you guys have noticed, but even though I'm the guy who makes a living playing guitar (and owns the forum) I usually defer to the two of you and a couple of other guys when it comes to answering gear specific questions unless its something that I personally own...the guys chiming in with a half baked or uniformed opinion are just causing the OP's further grief and wasted money IMHO.

I would have been no good on that question since I don't even have an amp with an effects loop. I try to stick to what I know, but probably am guilty of less than fully qualified advice now and again. Acoustic guitars are what I know really, really well, but the AG forum at HC is pretty dead and very ingrown. I quit posting much there.

I know the Classic 30 pretty well, and I know that I've been using an EQ in the loop for a boost for several years and it's worked better than anything I've ever used before.

But you don't have to be too knowledgable about the amp or the EQ to know that if you use the guitar's volume knob, then your rhythm tone is going to be less gainy than your lead tone. It's also pretty easy to figure out that adding a boost before an overdriven preamp is just going to further overdrive the preamp, creating a gain boost, but not a volume boost.

That's pretty basic stuff that you can figure out on your own in about 2 minutes. No need to ask about it on a forum.

its not the question that i mind. everybody has to start somewhere. its the people who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about giving advice.

i can't wait to see the turn the thread takes once he puts his Bad Monkey in the fx loop and reports back.

That's really what my problem is too. I mean, obviously he tried a boost before the distortion and discovered on his own that it didn't work. He just wanted to know what to do to make it work. There's no harm in not knowing the answer, but when someone gives him advice to do a different boost in front of the amp, it's just going to be a waste of time and money for him.

Also why the HC user gear reviews are useless.

Good thing it wasn't the "tuner isn't registering" so "maybe I should twist my volume knob" Trick.

That'll get ya everytime.

Every time we're setting up for a gig and either a speaker or a monitor isn't working on the PA, my first question is "Is it plugged in."

99% of the time, it is plugged in and the problem is something else, but I distinctly remember one time, I asked Chuck if it was plugged in and he was already frustrated so he got kind of snippy and replied "Yes, smartass, it's plugged....." and then he reached down and picked up the speaker cable off the floor, plugged the speaker in, and it worked like a charm. :D

I used to hang out in EG quite a bit because there were a bunch of cool guys there. Frets is of course close to the king of cool (he needs to visit here now and again). But then people started getting too uptight and short with other people. I get enough of that in GJ..

You should invite Frets and see if he'll come over....he might be cool to hang with if he's not too occupied with EG...
