Is there a recipe for chihli's wings somewhere?
Phil513
10-17-2008, 11:18 PM
Yeah, in the food thread i posted a variation on his recipe, the ingredients are the same.
Instead of marinading and baking though, just deep fry the wings til they are golden brown, then roll them around in the sauce.
Dip in bleu cheese dressing of course.
I did get the stuff, although i forgot the dressing, i gotta get that on the way home.

BTW, i dont have a deep fryer, i find a wok works just fine.

The last few times I made them I used my gas grill til they were nice and crispy then tossed them in franks hot sauce.

Well folks we're T minus 30 minutes to wing time. I even picked up a shiny new deep fryer for the occasion. And yes, there will be pics on Monday. Many pics, I promise you. I've got a few sauce concoctions in the mix, so I'll let you know how they turn out.

Dude, you HAVE to try them with Dave's. Seriously. Just a teaspoon will make the sauce hot enough for most people. I mean HOT, and it doesnt change the flavor much at all if any. Dave's is a low and slow burn, kinda like a hab. One wing and you're going "oooohhhhh yeah" and after 6 you're going "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh crap!".
I remember one night watching Raiders of the Lost Ark, my eyes were watering so bad I had to keep rewinding after I wiped my eyes.
But they do look perfect, Phil.....that color is exactly how my sauce looks. Man. I really HAVE to make some tonight now, even though I am still a little full from the wife's stuffed peppers. I'll give it another hour or 2 at least. Gotta wait till the woman goes to bed anyway.

I hope your wife is feeling better, my GF is having some pretty big troubles right now herself, i feel for her.
Anyway, yes i have a hookup for Dave's, Thredlok is going to send a bottle my way. They just dont seem to have it out here.
And yes, i wear contacts, many is the time i have messed with my eyes and regretted it, in fact even washing my hands well doesnt seem to fix it right away. hahaha.
These were the hottest batch i made so far, i was in a fair amount of pain, and for me that no small feat. hahahah. But i'll do the dave's, i'll let you know when i do.

Both websites are good. Seriously, EVERY "chilehead" needs to have a bottle of Dave's around. Not much for flavor, but it has a unique burn and is fantastic for adding to other pepper-based sauces (cayenne, Tabasco, serrano at least) without messing with their flavor.
I'm lucky, my local supermarket sells Dave's for like 4 bucks a bottle. Of course, one bottle will last me a few months so it isnt like my other favorite sauces I need to buy once a week. I buy Frank's red hot by the gallon. :-\

I'll definately try it. I love things hot.
I know there are shops around that have tons of hot sauce, but the only ones i know of for sure are a long ways from me.
I know there is one not too far from Mark, (at the outlet center up the 5 fwy, has egyptian stuff on the building, i think it was an old firestone buidling, i'll find the name of it) They have a store with aisles of hot sauce.

Prolly easier just to order it online. What is it, 5 or 6 bucks from those websites? Judging from what you have posted, a bottle will last you for a good few years.
I can drink tabasco or Frank's or any "normal" sauce like water. I actually did once cause my wife kinda egged me on. Not a brag, just how it is. I cant detect ANY heat in either anymore.
Point being, Daves is super hot for me. If you can get heat still from Tabasco, I would guess you still have some normal pain receptors in your mouth and would only need a few drops of Dave's like I used to. ;D
I still find it unpleasant to taste it un-diluted. Not killer, over the top kinda thing, but too hot to be pleasant for sure. The stuff is no joke.

Um, if it's a Blair's sauce with a skull on it, I assure you it is no marketing ploy. I wouldnt touch Blair's stuff. Seriously. I am not into pain. Well, a LITTLE pain.
You know what scoville units are? If not just google them. Let's put things into perspective here.
A jalapeno rates at 2500-5000.
A cayenne rates at 30,000 - 50,000
A hab at about 350,000 on the high end.
The best estimates for Dave's insanity hover around 200,000
I can tell you from personal tasting, these ratings seem pretty much correct to me. Dave's is on the very high end of what I can "handle". A cayenne has a nice burn. A jalapeno is a little tingly. A hab makes me want to die. Dave's is, as I said, over the line of a "good" burn but not a "I want to DIE" like a hab. So they all seem pretty accurate based on my subjective rating based on tasting all of them.
Blair's hottest sauce is SIXTEEN MILLION. Dude, you couldnt PAY me to try it. And I LOVE heat. Aaaaahhhhhzzzz might be able to handle it, because based on his posts he is just plain crazy. That man has balls the size of Russia.
So, point being, if the sauce that had a skull on it was a Blair's sauce, I assure you the waiver is no marketing ploy. I wanted to sue MYSELF after I ate one of my fresh habs, and his sauces generally START at that much heat and go up from there. :o
So whats up with your better half man?
EDIT: Nevermind, I saw your answer to Mark asking that. Man, I dont know EXACTLY what's up, but I do know what it's like to have something wrong with your loved one. Only thing in the world worse is if its your kids, an I wouldnt want to have to make the choice, neither are easy.

And how is Mrs Chihili doing at the moment as well?
BJ (my wife, her name is Bobbie Jo) is cool. She is sick, and miserable, but just a normal sick and miserable. Her Sjogren's seems to be under control at the moment. She is on herbs and vitamins and supplements, etc. I told her I wanted her to start taking Chondroitin and Glucosamene (sp?) and she has, along with other stuff, and it seems to be working very, very well.
She has done a lot more physical activity than normal this summer with seemingly no ill effects whatsoever, and stopped taking her meds because they were having odd and bothersome side effects. Her rheumatologist basically told her that it was fine to stop taking the plaqinell (sp?) if she actually felt better.
Her joints and bones are in bad shape for her age, and will continue to be. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it. She needs a crap-ton of dental work because this disease is attacking her teeth, just like every other bone in her body.
HOWEVER, she can basically do whatever she wants to without pain and swelling for now, she feels good, has normal amounts of energy, and can live completely normally with this disease, at least for now.
So, needless to say, we are glad that she feels good, and taking full advantage of it while she does.

Have they diagnosed her with anything specific? If you dont want to answer, it's totally cool but I can relate. I know that doctors are really great at what they do, but I really have to say that sometimes herbs and homeopathic methods can do pretty amazing things.
Of course, I also believe that prayer can too but I wont beat anyone over the head with either. :)

She has fought them off for years, they come and go. i guess now though its gone into other parts too, without getting too graphic.
She was doubled over in pain, they gave her vicodin, and that messed her up horribly. So now they gave her tamodol hydrochloride, or something like that, its helping with pain but makes her really dizzy.
Its just kinda messy right now. They recommend its time for it all to go.

I guess you do what you can and enjoy life to the fullest while you can...is this something that she can maintain for a long time?
Who knows? I posted about this quite a few times on HC, but assuming you know nothing about what is happening with her, here is the basic rundown.
Initially, she was diagnosed with Lupus, which is an auto-immune disease which can attack any part or any system of the body at any time. Lupus can (it isnt usually, but CAN be) be a death sentence.
She had a friend growing up who died in her mid-30s due to Lupus.
We were horrified at first, and I took it way worse than she did. I tried to be cool about it, but never really got to that point.
Long story short, turns out that she does not in fact have Lupus, but rather Sjogren's syndrome. Sjogren's is an auto-immune disorder in the same vein as Lupus and Rehumatoid arthritis, but Sjogren's attacks the moisture-producing glands in the body primarily, but can attack bones and joints or whatever else it feels like.
Well, hers attacks bones and joints, along with moisture glands. So, basically, her joints are all jacked up, she has arthritis, she can get swollen from doing normal things such as walking or typing, etc, and she has dry eyes and dry-mouth and things like that. In her case, it seems to attack her bones and moisture glads equally.
All that being said, she doesnt really have to worry about her major organs or anything like that. We are grateful for that. It is possible, if not probable, that in a few years she will have major problems doing normal things that require normal movement. Her specialist has already told her that she has the joints of a 70 year old woman. She is 30.
If we can slow that, hopefully she can maintain her current level of mobility, and hopefully even improve it. But the fact is, we just dont know. So we take each day as it comes.
Which is why we decided to foolishly "blow our wad" so to speak on a trip to NYC, so she could see it while she s still able to walk normally and feel decent doing it.
We dont know how she will fel next week or next year. Nobody can predict it.
So, anyway, that was a huge post but that is the simplest I can explain it.

Whats up with your girlfriend if you don't mind me asking in a public forum?
And how is Mrs Chihili doing at the moment as well?
BJ (my wife, her name is Bobbie Jo) is cool. She is sick, and miserable, but just a normal sick and miserable. Her Sjogren's seems to be under control at the moment. She is on herbs and vitamins and supplements, etc. I told her I wanted her to start taking Chondroitin and Glucosamene (sp?) and she has, along with other stuff, and it seems to be working very, very well.

Thanks for letting me know...I saw some of your earlier posts but I never saw the one with this info on HC.
My sisters sister-in-law has had Lupus for 25 or so years and that has been the major charity that their family has promoted with their kids so I am somewhat familiar with that if not your wife's actual condition.
Your trip to New York wasn't a foolish thing in my estimation...you have to live each day to the fullest and take the opportunities as they come. Situations like this serve to remind us how fortunate we are with each passing day. With luck you can look back on this time for many years to come with good memories but still have your wife in relatively good health.

Lots of people on HC posted about knowing people with Lupus when we got the initial diagnosis. It made me feel so much better about it.
I have to admit.........look you guys all know where I stand, which of course is the main reason I got so frustrated and angry on GJ, because I was constantly getting crap for it. But I have to admit, I really, REALLY struggled when we were told that. Not with what I know to be true, but how I felt about God.
We had some pretty big fights. Ones in which I said things I regret to this day. Even now I admit, I am struggling with it at times. Like, how could you bring her back into my life, knowing how I feel about her, and then give us THIS?????
Anyway, that is beside the point. Honestly, we are both glad it isnt Lupus. And We kinda have the attitude of "let's LIVE. Live now, do what we have always wanted to do and take each day as it comes".
Sometimes it isnt the wisest things we do but we feel very blessed to live the life we are right now.

I think the luckiest thing is that you know how important it is to live life to the fullest now. Many people lose their chance before they figure that out.
I have quite a few regrets about how I lived my life in my 20's. I wasn't a nice person. The things that cause me the most regret are the things that make me try harder now in this life, with all of my blessings as modest as they might seem to some people. I now know to appreciate what I do have...something I missed for many years and might have never figured out had it not been for my wife....

You wanna get it off your chest sometime? Cool. You dont? Cool too. It does sound like your GF is a really cool chick.

And yes, beer with wings is a wonderful thing. hahahaha.
