View Full Version : Mrs. P was about to really hurt me yesterday.

I've got some company coming over tonight to play music, so I have been cleaning up the attic/studio for the last couple of days. The trash collectors come on Friday morning, so after I got home from work, and before Mrs. P got home from work, I took out the trash. I had been holding on to a couple of guitar boxes for months (I think I've had one of them for a few years) and decided to get rid of them.
So, Mrs. P comes home and sees two guitar boxes in the trash, and immediately assumed I'd bought two new guitars. :o

She doesnt understand GAS, eh?
I havent had that problem really, mostly cause my GFs guitar costs as much as all my cheapo electrics put together.

Yeah, if Mrs Aahzz found 2 guitar boxes in the trash and we'd not discussed the incoming instruments, there'd be problems.

Did you guys ever seen any of AJCoholic's build threads over on HC/EG?
I used to LOVE following those, he's a woodworker and would do the whole thing from scratch, other than a precut fretboard.
Even did a hollowbody archtop.

Wilkinson makes great hardware! On my Suhr Tele the bridge is "Wilkinson by Gotoh"
My buddy Scott has a Wilkinson trem on his Tyler guitar and it is a great bridge....

No, the bodies I built from scratch, the walnut strat has a warmoth neck, the lp jr has an washburn usa custom shop neck I scored off ebay for 20$, the oak top tele has a mighty mite neck, and the walnut tele has a washburn n2 neck that I scored 2 for 25$ off of ebay.
I'll have to check my computer later this evening to see if I have some build photos.
I this one on photobucket of the oak top tele:

It's what is left of the board that I made the two guitars out of. I sold the rest of it on ebay ;D
It's wide enough for a one piece top but only 3/4" thick so I added a 1/4" maple filler strip to bring the total thickness to 1-3/4".
The board was over seven feet long and 15"-17" wide.

Thredlock, that is gorgeous.
I used to work with a guy who was a cabinetmaker by trade, and also took general carpentry jobs. Lots of what I did was just gutting and hanging new drywall and stuff like that, but we got to be good friends (and actually that reminds me, I actually need to call him back....he called me last week and I didnt answer...) and anyway I really got an appreciation for different woods back then. That was before I started playing.
I think that is why I have such an obsession with my guitars looking pretty, I love woodgrain. ALL of my current guitars have at least some figuring, even my crazy 80's-looking B.C. Rich.
I am a total sucker for a nice flame, or on the right shape, a really deep quilt, or on any shape, a really nice natural finish. What you posted is simply gorgeous.

They had a pile of black walnut that looked like someone just dropped in the back corner of the store. It was probably 1/3 of the wood stock they had so I started digging. There tools are crazy expensive, I have never bought any of their tools. The tools I have are mostly from home depot. Ryobi bandsaw and router table, and a delta disc and belt sander.
Most of the wood I get is from Thoag on ebay. He is a real good guy, and you can tell him what you are looking for and he'll find it. He sold me two pieces of sapele enough to make the oak top tele and the lp jr for 50$. I love that guy :D

What's wrong with Craftsman? Sure, they break more often than the really high-end tools on the market, but in my experience if you take them back to Sears they will give you a new one no questions asked. I mean, you could take a blowtorch to a craftsman and intentionally cut it in half and they wouldnt think twice about it from what I have seen.
I used to work in a Chrysler/Jeep dealership's service dept, and went through my fair share of tools, all craftsman because they were the most affordable ones with a warranty, and they never once asked any questions.
Are they giving you crap at your local Sears?

Actually the Craftsman stuff I have is great. Better than the Ryobi that I have and all of my mechanics tools are Craftsman. You have to buy the right stuff but I think you can get really good tools from them if you aren't "wrenching" for a living. Even my Father in law uses some of their stuff and one of his employees uses ALL Craftsman tools in their shop.
And they will take ANYTHING back if you break it.
The stuff like SnapOn and Mac apparently are more and more being manufactured in China and their quality is slipping...the SnapOn rep has been banned from my inlaws shop because they weren't taking care of warranties for his employees and the tools were getting worse and worse...

Wow....Mac and SnalOn used to come to the shop once a week, and the techs would always be buying and trading in busted stuff for new tools. The guy I worked with LOVED his SnapOn stuff, I have to say it definitely broke WAY less than my Craftsman stuff did.
Shame they're getting cheap now. If anything, I am encouraged to stick with the cheaper Craftsman stuff now.

My father in law has some ancient Snap on tools that he still uses to this day...stuff he bought in the 1960s and even stuff that HIS dad bought earlier than that. Apparently they are not the same company that they used to be, though.
When I worked in a garage after college I would see the mechanics line up when the snap on truck came every week like 10 year olds waiting for the ice cream man. They would run ridiculous tabs with the guy too... :)

Yup. The techs (mechanics) in the shop I worked in would swear by their SnapOn stuff. Dave (my "mentor" so to speak) let me use his after a while, and some of them were actually really nice, but most were pretty much like the stuff I had. Only negative about my Craftsmans was that I had to go to Sears to exchange mine, but like I said they NEVER asked how it broke.
Still to this day, if I were back in that shop (and as crazy as it sounds, I wish I was) I would use Craftsman over SnapOn or Mac.

I have no beef with their mechanics tools....some of the cordless tools and woodworking stuff is less than accurate but if you spend a little extra money and step up a little bit you can do pretty well there, too.
I think SnapOn can be like boutique guitars. Since they are "Pro mechanics" they need to use "Pro mechanics tools" and not "that crap the hobbyist use in their driveway" ;D
