I have a serious dislike for pretty much all PRS guitars so this came as a surprise to me....
The Trumpet teacher here at the studio who also is a working guitarist just bought this used PRS semi hollow McCarty...I played it for a couple of lessons tonight and while I would never pay the $4600 asking price for one I actually really enjoyed playing it.
Looks like I need a nap :o

Nice guitar. Hideously expensive, but nice.

The Hollowbody Spruce is actually the sweetest sounding of the entire hollow series... and ironically the least expensive.
Elderly has some pre-owned hollowbody PRS guitars for 2500 or so.
Edit: Just checked... they sold the sunburst one. They have a black Spruce top for 2200.

Nothing wrong with PRS, IMO. :o

What are the differences in a McCarty PRS?

I am undereducated on the details, but if I remember correctly there are McCarty pickups and my favorite thing is that it has a 3 way switch and not the 5 way rotary knob.....

McCartys have thicker bodies too. At least the solids do.

What are the selections?
I'd assume the 3 way is bridge, both, neck, and the push/pulls are coil taps.

3 way is wired the normal way.
push/pull puts individual pup into parallel. so its still a fully humbucking guitar, but i get a thinner sound out of it. the bridge pup can get almost tele-esque.

It amazes me how many people say they hate ALL PRS guitars because of the 5-way rotary.......... when it's only on most of the Custom 22s, Custom 24 and a few of the CEs. You'll see the option listed as "McCarty Switching" for a standard three way with a coil tap like Howie mentioned.
The McCarty, The Standards, Swamp Ash, Hollowbodies, 513's, the Mira, Starla, DGT, etc etc etc... all use switching without the rotary.
Of course, PRS does some of this themselves... the "Regular" neck carve is only available on a handful of 24 fret guitars. The wide-thin or wide-fat are the standard necks on most... with many others having custom neck carves specific to that model.

FWIW, I've never really had a problem with the rotary switch on my PRS. I've though about converting to a 3 way with coil taps, but never really saw the point.

Honestly... the only thing I'd compliment a 5 way rotary equipped guitar would be a mini-switch or push pull on the volume to go to bridge humbucker only on the fly.
That way it would be easy to toggle between bridge humbucker and whatever jangly rhythm sound you have selected on the rotary.

i ordered my PRS through Willcutt Guitars. i had played the same guitar at Matt Umanov, went back, and it had been sold. so i ordered one and they gave me a better price, without tax, than i could have gotten anywhere else. it was just gonna take 4 months.
anyway, i was relieved when the 3 way switch was a standard option. i ordered the most basic guitar you could get from PRS. regular neck carve, moon inlays, and McCarty switching. i wanted to get different pups, but they would have cost me $100 each. so i took it with the Vintage Bass and HFS, figuring i could always change the pups (which i did, a year later, to the Dimarzio Virtual PAFs in there now).
i know for a fact that my guitar doesn't sound like a standard PRS. its not all middy and compressed, and doesn't play like a shredder. if i want that, i can put high gain pups into my Ibanez RG.

i'd rather have both humbuckers running full in the middle position instead of the inside coils in series.

I'm personally not a fan of the typical PRS sound....this guitar had a little bit of it but I guess the hollow body and whatever intangibles make a person enjoy one guitar more than another made it not be a factor.
It had a Matt Umanov sticker, too....
