I wasn't really. This might be a troll thread, however: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2126174

I'm not really trolling. I'm curious to see if people can provide clips and youtube links that help me sort this out. I'd like to be able to like Waits, but I don't get it mostly. ???

I think you'll be able to get more than 10 responses, a lot of people like Tom.
It's not a big deal if you don't like him...it's just a matter of personal taste. I think he's a great story teller. I would suggest Blue Valentine if you haven't heard it.
Personally I don't care for Zappa that much...to each their own ;)

I don't read your post as a troll, because all you are doing is asking people to demonstrate why you should like something or to convince you to change your opinion. You might or you might not depending on how things go.
King Troll (Wayne Vinson) posts are trolls because all he does is tell you his opinion and then spends a week explaining why your opinion is lesser. And he searches for buttons to push on each forumite. Its a very involved process. :)

Speaking of troll threads, why are people still caring about Waynes David Gilmore thread?

Blue Valentine is the one with Postcard From a Hooker in Minneapolis, right? I may start there since I already like the one song.
Zappa is like everybody else who was really experimenting with music. He had hits and misses, and it gets easier to make sense of him when you dig in and listen to a bunch of his records. I don't like all of it, but I really like some of it.
I assume that Waits is the same way. With the exception of obvious trash like the new NKOTB record, I generally like to try to find a way to enjoy most music and art. If it's a challenge, I just look for a "way in", so to speak. For example, I didn't really enjoy Wilco's later albums until I heard Summerteerh, which served to bridge the gap between where they started and what they became. Once I got it, I could enjoy it.
Maybe Waits will be similar.

I got blasted on GJ for hating on Tom Waits before. Songwriting genius aside, I don't get the allure of listening to a man that sounds like he just swallowed gravel and pine cones.

I lub Tom.
I'm not a huge fan of some of the newer stuff, but old Waits is pretty great. One of my favorite songs is "Little Trip to Heaven" so you could start there, I guess.
I also really dig "The Piano Has Been Drinking".

If you go read wikipedia and some other sites on the history of internet trolling, the writers kind of glorify the great trolls. I think a lot of the internet dwellers have come to believe that trolling is a kind of ironic art form, where the insiders who recognize the trolling can have a laugh at the expense of the outsiders who don't. Everyone likes to be an insider. The problem is that this nonsense has been going on for so long and has been so well publicized that everyone is an insider, and it's all very boring now. I don't know why people continue participating in obvious troll threads; maybe for the same reason zombies flock to shopping malls. It's just what we do.

Yup, that is the album that "Postcard" is on. It's good that you keep an open mind. ;)
To tell you the truth, I'm kinda surprised that you don't like his stuff. You write some clever and witty stuff, and seem like the kinda of person who could appreciate Waits approach.
(that's a poorly worded compliment) ;D

I like good trolls. I think most people do, cause they are just plain funny. Problem is, I think we all have our own definition of what a "good" troll is. I think JJ is the best, tbh. On any forum. Ever. The guy is hilarious, but always leaves you wondering if the occasional serious post is real or not.
I DO recognize it as almost an art form. I cant imagine trying to do it REALLY well. Trolling would be easy, but to keep it above just insults and "you're wrong", I DO think that takes at least a little bit of talent.

It's good to have a talent that provides no service at all to society and doesn't make you any money. :D

I don't enjoy arguing with people whose minds are already made up in real life. Doing it with a person online who is just taking a position to piss people off for their own entertainment appeals to me even less.
